A Netflix Community

I think it would be a good idea for us to help create a list of words that would stop us from posting a review. I can update the list as words are submitted. Here is what I collected so far from previous posts and other topics: [Words with a ~ in front of it means, that the way it is shown here, is a representation of the actual word]

Below is a compilation (as of 11/3/08)

Netflix (or any variation of the word)
Porno
~ F*ck or any other words in this "genre" (spelled out, or tweaked)
~ @ss (spelled out, or tweaked)
~ Bull Sh*t (spelled out, or tweaked)
~ B*tch (spelled out, or tweaked)
"http" and "www"
gang bang (used together)
breast(s)
slutty
wh@re - the word (and/or the unusual combination of letters)
penis
Vagina
Bastard
pricks

The only somewhat less obvious terms are things like some body parts and racist epithets...

any word of 25 characters in length

review must be longer than 80 and less than 2000 characters

I bet Jane Fonda knows one.

What's the best way to add the word to the list?

The main purpose of the filter is to promote a family-friendly ambience, and I think for Netflix's site it's reasonable to do so.

Prohibiting words like "Netflix" and "porno" is a bit extreme, and seems almost an invitation to "rattle the cage."

In the end, I think assembling such a list has little use other than to undermine the list's legitimate purpose, so I'd just as soon not, though I have no real objection to others doing so.

Is it wrong for a rated R title to have a similar type of review?

Reviews are readable by all.

R-rated movies often have PG trailers that are only shown with PG movies.

But a review would probably be read by someone who is interested in the R-rated movie.

I agree, but I also see Netflix point. I am also willing to respect it. I just wish the time I described Shoot 'Em Up as a "Kick Ass" thrill ride that it would have come back to me saying "you have triggered our content filter" instead of "Review submission error" I thought it was a connection issue with my lap top. I also LOST the whole review and re-wrote it three times before realizing I better save it. I finally had to call customer service and have them tell me "ass" in not a word you can use in reviewing a Rated R movie. I wish I knew that up front. ... Oh well. =) Live and learn. =)

Cheers!
Matt

And if you knew ahead of time? I think that a list, just like anything, can be used to help or not help. If I wrote a review, and it came back as a problem with it, again and again. I'd give up trying to do so. But if I knew that it was the way I wrote it, then I'd be careful how it was written so as to make sure it would be entered the first time perfectly.

I saw someone write in the "Reviews that Aren't Reviews" thread, that these two words stopped a review. A list would be helpful in people not getting frustrated when composing a review in the first place. No?

Sure, that's what I mean by "rattling the cage" -- testing limits. I've frequently attempted to include some critique of Netflix policies in my reviews, and so ran into that snag, but its easy to say NFLX, and the other obstructions have never come up for me, so I don't feel I need to know the exact limits.

Knowing exact limits is most useful for those who want to push them.

If you wanna compile such a list, go for it.

Do you (or anyone else) think it's a bad idea as to keep this thread going? I'll delete this thread if that's that case.

I don't think the thread is a problem.
