A Netflix Community

Ok, I'm in ranting mode. WHY do people rent a film that clearly states why it's rated what it's rated, and then instead of REVIEWING the film, say how inappropriate they found it? I found a comment on a Lewis Black disc that my husband rented about how the comic used vulgar language. UH, yeah. Weren't you familiar with Lewis Black before you rented his DVD? If people can't handle the material then WHY are they members of NF? Maybe they should just sit home and stare at the ceiling. It's called life, people. Get on with it.

How the hell did this country end up being so bloody Victorian?

End up? I thought we were always Puritans with a hypocritical wild streak. (i.e. Victorians)

Sister Wendy is a cool nun.

Sister Wendy rocks! I bought those DVDs and the book. Those moms need to be tied up and put in the middle of a bath house for two hours.

you stand a much higher chance of making a serial killer fascinated with killing and dissecting dirty, dirty whores.

I had to read that twice before I realized you meant this as a warning!

While I'm not the most objective person on the topic (a son of two public school teachers), I think it's time we really tighten the laws on home schooling. But I also think that we need to make the investment to reduce class size and improve offerings so that everyone gets what they need from the system, which should be easier today than it was when we were in school thanks to technology.

The laws are tightening, at least in some areas. California just changed the law so you have to have a teaching degree in order to home-school (which is as it SHOULD be, in my opinion). Of course, this put the people who home-school in order to AVOID a proper education in a froth. I expect beaucoups lawsuits and much LOLs shortly.

Yet, there are still teachers in public schools with no degrees.

In which case, that would involve separating the mentally disabled kids from the mentally retarded kids. I was forced to sit with them and was labelled for life because it. Thank goodness for the fresh start of a private school, with which I'm proud to say, I made very significant progress.

And speaking of technology, is recording notes with an ipod, or studying with sparknotes actually cheating? If the teachers in these schools as smart as they thing they are, they would tell if a student is cheating. Mine can.

I agree completely!

You do your kids a better service by watching stuff with them then talking about things you disagree with in the message and giving them the other side.

Totally agree: can't wait to watch I Spit On Your Grave with my son, so we can discuss the intricacies of human relationships.

Really? As far as homeschooling, I never of it. But ridiculously, many schools on 9/11 decided not to let their students know much. Like they wouldn't find out after school that day? Puh-lease! Lucky for me, My fifth/sixth grade classroom went as far as having the tv on. I remember that moment clearly. As for your friend, their are people who make a living out of personally taking care of the mentally challenged. I was diagnosed with Autism, surely, but it's a form that makes me think differently, I am no more retarded than anyone else, and in fact it's proven that for some people, it could mean a higher IQ. It's both a gift and a curse, I can grasp things that most people might take a lifetime to get, but be slow with other things, more common sense takes just a second, doing things, I just am slower.

But keeping kids from having knowledge of the real world only postpones the pain and makes it worse. I'm definitely not slow getting that. It's like the story of Sidartha and how he was raised behind palace walls with no knowledge of pain or suffering. When he found out, he was practically heartbroken and learned compassion from that.
