Last night, I watch Der Ostwind (The Eastwind) and really enjoyed it. It is a short (10 minutes) available on Watch instantly about a German WWI pilot.
I also saw The Last Man on Earth on Watch Instantly starring Vincent Price. I'll probably watch Heston's Omega Man as well before I Am Legend.
Up next is Spider-Man 3 (Realized that I had put it off for a year now, and I figured I'd better watch it before I got it as a present), Ugetsu, and Grand Illusion.
Richard Matheson is one of my favorite writers and enjoyed 2 out of 3 adaptations of his novel I AM LEGEND. The new Will Smith crapfest can be skipped...IMHO. I wote a review on the regular Netflix site so please check it out. If you enjoy a good horror flick then queu THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE; Matheson adapts his own novel HELL HOUSE for the big screen and makes a creepy and disturbing flick reminiscent of Robert Wise's great THE HAUNTING but with more sexual depravity and physical/emotional violence. Oh, and queu THE HAUNTING too if you havent seen it which is based on the Shirley Jackson novella THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE. Viddy well!
I recently bought a first edition of "I Am Legend" at a local bookshop for 75 cents. The little gem was just languishing there on the shelf waiting for me. Score!
Great find! I have a seocnd paperback printing that I discovered in my local used bookstore. My best find was a first American Edition of ANIMAL FARM for $10 at a crummy used bookstore in Ocean City MD.
Just re-watched TRAINSPOTTING on Japanese Blu-Ray. The US is region coded with Japan so we can watch their BDs on our PS3s! It just took a few moments to navigate the menus since I don't read the language. It's been years since I viewed and had to write a review; I forgot what a damned great flick it was! Image and sound quality outstanding but not perfect; some mosquito-noise and grainy-ness but to be expected from an independant low-budget theatrical release. It is worth the upgrade from standard DVD due to the lossless soundmix and vibrant film-like colors and detail. Still Ewan McGregor's best performance...we'll just forget about the Lucasfilm fiasco.
I watched Eastern Promises last night. I really liked it, of course I like all mob movies so it would have to be really bad for me to not enjoy it. I loved the overall dark undertone and thought they did a great job pulling the viewer into the movie. I did expect a little more violence being that it was about the Russian mob, the bathhouse fight scene was spot on for what I was expecting and did not disappoint. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser - 3 stars - I enjoyed this Werner Herzog film based on a true story. As in all of his films there was beautiful cinematography and amazing sets and costumes.
Next DVDs sitting on my table:
Torchwood - I'm looking forward to this since I see it as a recommendation often in NF and on here.
Season 2 disk 1 of Extras - Great show I really liked Season 1.
The Tunnel and David Beckham: Life of an Icon
the cottage. a u.k. horror film about two idiot brothers who kidnap a young woman to get ransom money and take her to a backwoods cottage. there's a lot of humor to the film, and in fact for the first 30 minutes or so you wonder if you rented a horror film or a dark comedy. but it transitions nicely into a respectable slasher flick with an appropriate amount of gore. it does have some slow moments, but i still highly recommend it to fellow horror fans.
there will be blood. there were some scenes in this movie that were excellent. i particularly liked that the story was often told without words. and i did like the overall story...i just got tired of it taking its sweet time to play out. i don't hate this movie, i don't love it. i would only recommend it to those who are open to slower paced movies and don't easily turn them off. i wouldn't give this movie 5 stars - although daniel day lewis easily gets them - but it's definitely worth 3.5.
