I believe that there is a documentary on IW about how the writer/director shot himself in the balls with all this excessive egoism after Boondock had its minor success.
The Orphanage - 5/5. There are some absolutely intense scenes in this movie that involve very creepy kids. Excellent story and direction. Worth having to read the subtitles. If you're a horror fan, you must see this.
Goya's Ghosts - 3/5. Not bad, not the best. Overall, a disturbing story, particularly the ending (I guess an understatement, considering that it's about the corrupt power of the Catholic Church during the Spanish Inquisition). Javier Bardem makes this film, as you just love to hate him. Natalie Portman pulls off the pitiful Ines very well. **Bonus - I saw Girl with the Pearl Earring two weeks ago, which was also about the Spanish artist Goya. I liked that movie better (Colin Firth). Guess I've had my fill of 18th century Spanish art for awhile.
I know I'll be flogged, but I thought Pan's Labyrinth was overrated. I watched it twice and still didn't see how it could rise above 3 stars. I did appreciate the dude sewing his face though.
I liked Pan's Labyrinth but it doesn't compare to The Devils Backbone or The Orphanage. Seemed more like an "Are you afraid of The Dark" episode for kids.
