It took 4 or 5 sittings, but I finally made it through all three hours of Olivier's Othello. I like the play, but I hate it when movies based on Shakespeare are presented as filmed plays. Why not use the power of film and make the production look authentic to place and time? This is what I like about Branagh's stuff.
I know what you mean, I've just seen Henry V, but I liked Branagh's style.
I love Branagh as a director, but as an actor he makes my butt twitch. He's such a ham and, especially when he's directing himself, he overshadows the other characters even when it's not appropriate. I keep waiting for him to look at the camera and give a Broadway diva acknowledgement breaking the 4th wall to recognize that he knows you are adoring him. I know I may be in the minority as many people feel it's the quality of his performance that does it, but when I see him on screen all I can think of is "it's the pictures that got small".
I don't like him either.... I hate what he did to Frankenstein and I will never forgive him. He had so many great actors to work with and he ended up with that piece of #!#@#@ Junk.
This weekend was a big movie weekend for me I think we watched 9 different films.

Shoot 'em Up - 4* - Clive Owen in a powerhouse action movie with a massive body count for one man. Enjoyed watching th playoff between Clive & Paul Giamanti not your normal bad guy. Entertaining to say the least.

Vertigo - 5* - It's been years since I watched this, but it was great to revisit an old favorite.

Mad Money - 5* - I loved watching and laughing the whole time, a great comedy with 3 fabulous actresses Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, & Kattie Holmes

Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont - 5* - Not what I was expecting at all. A great film where Joan Plowright takes you on a journey through her memories, as well as teaching her adopted grandson the true way to live.

Mrs. Henderson Presents - 4* - Watching Judi Dench is always a pleasure, a true portrayal of a forgotten age.

Dead Ringer - 5* - What can I say Bette Davis is good anytime. One of her best films ever IMO.

Valley of the Dolls - 4* - Another blast from the past. Give me a doll anytime. Although the theme song gets on my nerves everytime I hear it. Its one of those that just gets stuck there over and over and over.

Dawn of the Dead - 4* - George A. Romero still makes me cringe everytime I see his films and even now with all of the special effects that weren't available back them his is still gives me creepy chill bumps up and down my spine.

Lastly, there was In the Valley of Elah - 4* - Based on true events, this was a sad enjoyable film that leaves you hanging until the end.

UP NEXT: Slipstream, The Orphanage & Two Weeks
Last night I watched Aventurera (Mexico, 1950)
http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Aventurera/70001730?trkid=226870

It was O.K.
It reminded me of Edgar G. Ulmer's Club Havana (PRC, 1946).
3 1/2 stars out of 5

Next up is The Eel (Japan, 1997) on VHS

The thread closes every sunday night?
I try to close it as near to 250 posts as I can manage...but it has to be off the main board before I'll close it. :-)
I suggest (am I alone here?) that you should have it closed by a certain date & time. Say every sunday night @ 12 am. This way, I'd know when to post etc. If I post at the end of when you're about to close, less chance of discussion etc.
I saw Spider-Man 3, and realize I put it off for good reason. I didn't hate it, but it certainly fell short in my opinion. The only really good part was laughing at Bruce Campbell's antics.

Up next is Ugetsu and Grand Illusion.
My recent activity:

Thank you for smoking --- very smart.
Into the wild -- good.
The general --- amazing.
The black dahlia -- good.
The quiet american -- very boring.
Them -- good effort for a thriller/horror flick. Same basis as The Strangers.
In the company of men --- great.
irreversible -- amazing.
hard candy -- just eh.
funny games -- good.
less then zero -- no.
Last night I watched:

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - I really enjoyed watching an older movie that was way before it's time. The story line is great and there are several scenes in the movie that are intense and spectacular. It has an interesting angle on the interaction between humans and aliens. I really enjoyed this classic.
