I finally got around to The King of Kong. I'm a gamer and spent my fair share of time and quarters in an arcade in my day and I still thought this was going to be nerdfest of proportions I couldn't handle. Instead I got Star Wars with video games instead of light sabers.
The BS Mitchell and crew pull is just unreal. I actually met Billy Mitchell once and thought he was an arrogant idiot. Dang, I have good instincts. By the end, it doesn't matter who wins, there's a clear winner as far as "getting" life is concerned and the other has the hair and maturity level you would have seen had you seen him at his prime at age 16. Seriously give it a chance. (FYI all sites that have connection with Mitchell are down and have been including Twin Galaxies and his Ricky's Hot Sauce. Methinks people might be expressing disapproval).
I watched " Confessions Of A Superhero". It is a documentary, and you can watch it instantly. The film was great. Wonder Woman is freakin fine, or the girl that impersonates her.
I did manage to see Creature from the Black Lagoon last night on Watch Instantly. It is only available for a few more days (Expires 5/31/08) in case anyone wants to watch it online. I thought it was definitely worth watching, good to see a classic horror flick every now and then.
I've been away a few days almost entirely spent watching movies. Wife and baby away for the holiday. All of the films part of my ongoing and never ending Oscar quest. Here are the highlights:
Their Own Desire: Norma Shearer sexual politics romp from 1929. Surprisingly good for a very early talkie. Norma was a babe-and-a-half.
The Keys of the Kingdom: Gregory Peck plays a priest in China. Long but pleasant. Peck's second movie — he was 4F so the war and the availability of parts for a competent leading man really gave him a career boost. Available for IW.
Trial: Arthur Kennedy is one of the best actors you've never heard of. I DVR'd this from TCM. Great courtroom drama with a shot of McCarthyism.
With a Song in My Heart: Fine musical schmaltz DVR'd from Fox Movie Channel. Susan Hayward is great as WWII era singer Jane Froman who survives a plane crash.
The Reivers: Solid Americana that looks like a Disney film, despite the ominous title. Seems to be the Steve McQueen picture that no one has seen.
The Green Years: Good wartime British family fare with Charles Coburn guiding his great grandson to adulthood. Interesting to see Jessica Tandy play Hume Cronyn's daughter.
Cross Creek: Mary Steenburgen plays author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings in this interesting film. Would make a great double bill with The Yearling.
Vera Drake. Exquisite. Everyone should queue this.
Here's the rest: Ali, Dead Man Walking, Pieces of April, Venus, What's Love Got to Do with It?, Friendly Persuasion, Educating Rita, North Country, and Sweet Bird of Youth.
Yeah!!! I finally watched Mystic River. Woo hoo! Doing my happy dance!!!
Next We are going to the theater to see Iron Man. WOO HOO And Another Happy Dance... Please everyone feel free to dance with me....
