Black Book. About the Dutch Resistance to Nazi occupation. One of the best movies I've seen this year. Great set designs and acting. The film not predictable at all and quite graphic.
5 stars.
State of Play Top-notch BBC miniseries about investigative reporters unraveling a tangled skein of murder and corruption at the highest levels of government. Fast-paced and complex without a single false note thoroughout. I was glued to the screen for the entire 6 hours. 5 stars.
Interstate 60: Whimsical little indie comedy with a very creative plot; safe to say it's like a road trip through the Twilight Zone. Smart, funny and very well crafted. Highlight is Gary Oldman in one of his wonderfully oddball turns. Also features Chris Cooper and Christopher Lloyd in secondary roles, with bit parts for Kurt Russell, Michael J. Fox and Ann-Margret. 4 stars.
Lately I've been watching Torchwood episodes, more Alfred Hitchock presents and Doctor Who on-line.
This weekend I watched the first DVD of Season 1 of Soap . - 4 stars - I don't see why this TV series doesn't have a better rating on NF. It's rating on IMDB is 8 of 10. Fans must not have rated it on NF. It's a brilliant over the top comedy from the 70's and is still funny today. The show, about two sisters and their odd family members, dealt with many social situations and is the first show on TV that featured an openly gay character who is played by Billy Crystal. Disk 1 of Season 1 has 10 episodes so is well worth a rental. This is the kind of smart comedy that Fox would love to cancel.
The Fountain. - 5 stars - Gorgeous film, beautiful music and excellent story. This is one amazing film and, again, I don't see why it's not rated higher but it may be one of those that you love or hate. I loved it.
Extras: Season 2 - I finished up season 2 - 4 stars - I always liked Ricky Gervais in Office and really have enjoyed Extras.
Just finished Season 2 of Torchwood. I liked Season 1 better but I'd give the series 3 stars overall. It had some very clever stories but it could have been better in my opinion.
I watched BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID on Blu-Ray Saturday night then followed that with Coppola's newest film YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH on Sunday. I posted reviews for both movies today.
I enjoyed Stalag 17, but William Holden is so much better at sarcastic humor. It just seemed a little odd to have him appear in the same film as those slapstick guys. (Not that Holden was doing slapstick)
Watching Season 1 of Showtime's superlative "Brotherhood" with my visiting son who was surprised how much he really, really LOVES it (it helps that he's both a drama fan and a political wonk). I'm totally enjoying it all over again, myself. And I'm SOOOOO glad they decided to renew it for a 3rd season!!!!
