A Netflix Community

Did everyone else get this e-mail from Netflix:

" We wanted to let you know we will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account, effective September 1, 2008."

Why?

"While it may be disappointing to see Profiles go away, this change will help us continue to improve the Netflix website for all our customers."

Okay, how does Profiles going away improve Netflix? Am I the only one in household with multiple people each of whom want a different queue for tracking, rating, reviews, etc. Furthermore, according to the FAQ, there's no way to even transfer a Profile to a new separate account. So that means if you spent time rating tons of movies under one profile, all of that is lost! This seems like a huge disruption of service. In what way is this good? And there's not even any way I can see to match the equivalent functionality once they go away.

This to me is a huge negative change to the service for no visible reason.

What better time than now to show these noobs how a real complaint thread should look like...?
Yes, I too received this email, and once this takes effect I will be canceling my account.

This feature was more than simply about having multiple members of a household with separate queues -- it was about the ability for the household to change rental numbers depending on our circumstances. My wife, for example, is sometimes on call for 1-2 months at a time. During this period, I would often be able to use four or five of our five household rentals for my queue, rather than my usual three. It's fairly obvious that this is another move to make sharing an account just that much harder, in the hopes that every family member will now open accounts.

Profiles were pretty much the only feature I used that separated Netflix from Blockbuster. Without it Netflix is identical to Blockbuster Online, except with Blockbuster I can also go down to the store same-day.

It's been a good run Netflix, but now apparently it's time to move on to better companies that don't remove key features in order to try and extort a few extra dollars.

I completely agree with Josh. This was a really good thing and a clear advantage over Blockbuster. It is a huge mistake to take it away. I have no reason to stay with Netflix and don't think I will when they cut this off. Netflix you should stop this now! Steve

Will you not rent movies anymore? If you are going with a different company, what do they offer that you like?

once again netflix proves the end user paying everyones salary is the last person being thought of by this company...no more profiles??? what the hell who is in charge around there? web page changes not because the customer wants it but some corporate jack ass wants it...now families cant separate their movies, they now have to mix them all together????

My wife got it today, and couldn't be more pissed off about it. I use a profile under her account. I have 2,000+ ratings, a couple dozen reviews, 8 friends, 150 items in Queue and now all of that gets deleted? With nothing but a vague explanation. I've been a loyal Netflix user (fan, even) for years, and I'm actually considering dropping them because of this. This brings up a whole slew of questions. To begin with, how to manage the queue among family members? How am I supposed to distinguish my ratings from my wifes? Etc etc. This is total BS!! I'm steaming!

I called customer service. They said this is a feature that is causing slowness and disk space usage for people who don't use it. Thus, it will improve the interactivity of Netflix for most users. That, and apparently only 1% of all Netflix customers use Profiles, so it's not a large impact to their customer base. I asked about any options for transfering, exporting info, etc., etc. He basically said there aren't any options, there are no plans for any, and while it's a pain (and he used Profiles himself), just as a business decision it didn't make sense for the company. I asked him to formally note it on my account that this was a big issue for me. I would highly encourage anyone else this affects to also call Customer Service or e-mail them to complain as well besides writing on this forum. Perhaps if they hear from enough irate customers they will change their minds. We have from now until September 1. I'm also hoping to hear something on the Blog since this is a Community issue.

Sounds like I'm right, and they are just trying to save money. Will they pass the savings on to you? Nope, they will pass it on to themselves.

How much disk space can it be using and how much slower can it be making the site if only 1% of their customers use the feature?

Well i dont buy it, no way it slows down the site it is the same as a new user paying for a new account but you dont see them turning that money down...

Well no kidding, that you can really expect otherwise is astonishing. I don't know if doing this is necessary or not, but either way, expecting them to lower prices as a result is pure fantasy.
