Well, in one of the more painful episodes of the never-ending Oscar quest, I watched The Prince of Tides. I survived, but may be scarred forever.
On the other hand, I acquired a bootleg of the rare 1951 Fredric March version of Death of a Salesman, which was extraordinary, and nominated for 5 Oscars, including 3 in acting categories. (You know a film is rare when it only has 250 votes on IMDB) Although March was a multiple Oscar winner, and scored in all movie genres from drama to screwball to horror, he rarely comes up in serious discussions about the greatest actors of all time. A pity, the man had game.
But not as bad as The Mirror Has Two Faces, which may still be in your future since I believe Lauren Bacall was nominated for Best Supporting. Good luck, Prof.
On a happier note, I love Fredric March, too. Wish I could see his Willy Loman -- it would certainly be different from Cobb or Hoffman.
I watched Perfect Stranger last night. I liked it, Bruce Willis was good and Halle Barry was okay. It was suspenseful in all the right places and had a nice little twist at the end. 3.5 stars
Finished In Bruges last night and I gotta agree with Chawk who posted on the v9.0 thread. I loved the dialogue - very dark, very funny. Every character we meet will be involved in the plot by the end. Loved it!
I'm so mad at myself about this film. I love Martin McDonagh. I love his plays and I love his movies, yet I can't seem to enjoy this one. I have had it here for almost a week. I might just need to be in the right mood. I was laughing out loud it was so good, and on the edge of my seat for the action. Then, for no reason, turned it off 20 minutes before the end and haven't gone back.
But i am so happy to hear other people like it. Maybe it'll convince McDonagh to make more films.
Sunshine (1999) - Multigenerational movie starring Ralph Fiennes, who does a great job playing three different roles (grandfather, father and son). Unfortunately, at three hours, this one just was too tiring for me. By the time the son's story rolls around, I just wanted him to live a happy and very short life. ;)
