While it would admittedly be easier if all this community stuff was part of the Netflix site such that your nickname and avatar from over there would automatically present themselves over here... the next best thing is that it would make the community easier to follow if you used the same image and name over there and here. That way there is at least a little logical continuity.
It's not a rule, of course. Just a suggestion.
(I've clicked on a few of you and saw your Netflix Profile page and went "ohhhh, it's HIM....")
I could do that. I have the same user name, but my avatar here (more of a personal community) is actually me, while my avatar at Netflix is an image of an old style picture viewer (reflects that I've watched a ton of really old movies).
I had changed by Netflix avatar recently (but prior to Ning)...yes, I agree consistency is important and I ended up using the same (newer) avatar here (the old one was a plate of cupcakes that just looked a little odd to me sometimes). I'll try not to change my avatar again (but if so, I'll change across the board). Fortunately, I've always used the same nickname (which is actually my real name-- bring on the stalkers!). ;)
Noted and done, well of course I use this avatar with all of my online stuff except for a couple of things. So when you see my name you'll see the same thing on Netflix.
I'm all matched up. Same avatar everywhere, same nick everywhere it's not already taken. Cept Cybernations. Need the flag in the background, otherwise, same avy there even. Cheers~!

I use the same name everywhere. Phatz is a LONG time nickname that evolved through school and settled in as PHATZ about 16 years ago. The only time I am not Phatz (if it is taken like on myspace and yahoo) then I am BaPhatz. My avatar is a picture of my kids. It will change 2 or 3 times a year as they get older =) but always the two of them and it will be consistent all over the web. =)
Speaking of avatars... has anyone come across any (on ning or Netflix) that are offensive? I've seen quite a few that are a little disturbing but I wouldn't consider them inappropriate. But today I saw one of a woman who's naked from the waste up (I think it was Patricia Arquette) and I wondered if it should be reported. But then I wondered if I'm just being a prude. I don't think many children actually use the community features on Netflix so is it a big deal? What do you guys think?
First, is the avatar being used in an adult group? You can always send a message to the one who created the group and let them contact the member if they decide to do anything about it.
There are a few people using nudes as avatars on Netflix.... in most cases tastefully presented. It doesn't bother me until it crosses the line toward being sexually provocative, and I think that even kids should know that their bodies are normal, especially since I think it takes the sexual power of the nude body away when it becomes just another image.
Provocative poses that cross the line of tasteful art are another story. Unfortunately that line is hard to quantify and may need to be chosen by the parent and not any outside observer. Netflix may have to consider censoring images, the same as they do reviews.
I flag avatars containing sexual images that I find objectionable using the review system flags and figure that if enough people agree with me something will be done.
