Any opinions on the remake of the Day the Earth Stood Still?

Now I love the original movie, its up there with Harvey, Forbidden Planet, and the Maltese Falcon. And I'm not such a purist that I hate remakes, I mean if they are bad you appreciate the originals more if they are good you look back to see what inspired them. The effects seem really good, but I do dislike Keanu Reeves in the Michael Rennie role of Klaatu. In fact I just dislike Keanu Reeves period. So is the movie good enough to see even with Mr. Reeves hurting it. see trailer here

I say "bring it on." Personally, I love remakes - I'm always interested to see how the perspective changes due to time or culture, or with a character who has a revised personality.

Im not sure which direction they will go with this, but the original was great. I checked out the trailer and I probably will watch it since aliens might exist under water somewhere which brings up another discussion on here ( Which futuristic movie are you most afraid of coming true?)Started by Whatchawatchin. This would just be crazy. Keanu acted like a monotone robot in the trailer. I hope hes not like that in the entire movie. I will watch it

Well, I'm a sucker for sci-fi films so I'll probably watch it. Sigh. But like I mentioned in another thread, Keanu Reeves and his robotic voice/acting would definitely be a better Gort than Klaatu.

Hope it isn't as bad as the remake of "War of Worlds". The trailer looks entirely different than the original. ????? Still, it will be interesting to see.

I thought the same thing

I'll 3rd that. First thing that came to my mind. At least it's not Tom Cruise.

well, I think every movie is better with Keanu in it. not. He acts like a monotone robot in all his films, there are just occasional roles that call for it. See also: Nicholas Cage.

I'll admit to a hidden shame, I liked the Bill and Ted movies. And I liked Constantine as a movie but not Keanu in it. In the comics Constantine is a surly blond Englishman, (think James Marsters' Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, only not a vampire and you've pretty much got it) and not a bitchy surfer.

But I don't like Mr. Reeves cause he's an idiot and a weak actor. I'm not expecting my thespians to be neurosurgeons but c'mon have you ever read or watched his interviews, or seen him in "Much Ado About Nothing" or in "Chain Reaction." He's weak man, stupid and weak.

I don't know why people think "it's a Bill and Ted thing" that gives Keanu a bad name. He at least showed SOME emotion in that one! What gives him the bad name in acting is his inability to do so aside from that character designed for the Matrix. I have liked a couple of the movies he was in (Constantine, My Own Private Idaho, and yes, even Bill and Ted) but he had very little to do with my appreciation of those films. The only thing that saves him in Hollywood are the people who watch him for his looks.

I'm a big fan of the original and only rarely find a remake better than/as good as the original. As for Keanu playing an intelligent alien, uummm, nope I don't think so. I'll see it when it comes out but I'm afraid it will be a huge disappointment, or worse, double billed with the remake of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Hope I'm wrong.

Loved the original when I was a kid and continue to enjoy it. I'd be receptive the remake. I think with the advances in special effects and cinematography, good directors and casting agents can do wonders with great ideas and scripts from sci-fi classics like this one. On the flip side... too much(or not enough) can ruin the damn thing too. Guess we'll have to see what happens.

I hated WOTW... Tom Cruise is not one of my favorites for that type of film and the effects didn't quite do it for me.

Thanks for posting the link to the remake trailer. I had known about him working on this project for quite some time but forgot to seek out a trailer.

I think once again Keanu Reeves will continue specializing and utilizing his three most famous acting skills: 1. Confused 2. Retarded 3. Emotionless.
In case anyone didn't catch it, I was being sarcastic. I have an extreme dislike of Keanu Reeves as well.

The trailer has definitely affirmed the fact that I will probably not go the watch it in theaters. If it somehow ends up on tv, and I have nothing better to do. I just might watch it.
