A Netflix Community

What do you still want to see on the Netflix site? (Let's leave out the obvious few since we know about them and know how much you want them: >500 things in queue, 1/2 stars, mac-based instant watching, linux support, 7-day shipping, etc.)

What ELSE?

I would like to see an option to mark movies that I own and have them not show up as recomendations. I own over 350 movies and sometimes the recommended lists are 90% or better titles that I own.
It would also be nice if items in the Instant Queue could be downloaded to your machine ahead of time. similar to the Vongo service. That way you don't have any delays while watching, it also helps immensely if you don't watch the movie all in one sitting (I watch for about 45 minutes a day on the treadmill, so I have to either leave it paused for a full day or try to get back to where I was which is a pain using thier player. Come to think of it, a bookmark feature in the player would be nice too:-)

this has probably been mentioned, and i am far too lazy to see if it has already, but the "friends and community" section needs to be easier to use, particularly with some searchbars of some kind. i remember finding a top 10 list i found particularly good, but upon wanting to revisit it, could not remember the creator and had no way to find it. also, why can one not view their own top 10 lists (by covers and whatnot- make sure netflix picked the right movies)?

FYI the current limit on the maximum number of movies that may be saved in a Netflix list (under optimum conditions such as a fast computer and a fast Internet connection) has been confirmed to be 431. Your mileage may vary slightly.

At the culmination of incremental testing over several days, my Unavailables-1 list would not save a one-character change in the list title after a 432nd movie was added to the list.

Size of the list's notes are included in this limit because my Unavailables-1 list, pared back to 430 movies, would not accept the addition in its notes of "(See my Unavailables-2 list.)" but would probably do so if pared back to 425 movies.

When I began testing list-size limits more than a year ago, lists had a maximum capacity of about 190. Since that time, Netflix has steadily -- and, as always, silently -- improved its list-save efficiencies. Netflix members will appreciate such behind-the-scenes work because once the list-size limit is exceeded, a list becomes even more difficult than usual to modify* -- and a list that cannot be modified is often doomed to become outdated or obsolete.

* Movies must be added to a list individually as well as deleted individually, because a list-deletion bug will cause the unpredictable disappearance of more movies than intended should multiple deletions from a list be attempted between saves. The list-deletion bug is further complicated by the introduction earlier this year of a save-error bug wherein the list-save error message no longer appears when a list has not been successfully saved -- necessitating the manual verification of list-save accuracy whenever a list approaches or exceeds the list-size limit, now confirmed to be 431.

BTW For a few months now the limit for list size that remains editable has been stuck at 422 (down from 430). Problems editing or deleting one movie occur on my (powerful) system after 423 movies are listed. I try to keep my lists to 420 now but I'll go to 422 until I can trim or prune one way or another.

This is new to me. If I select an Unavailable movie (for example, from one of my two main profile lists of 480+ Unavailable titles) while logged into a secondary profile, the screen says Instant Watching is available only for the main profile. Apparently in the same way that our Friend Notes do not appear on the movie page (only in our Notebook), Netflix now equates IW and Unavailable movies and refuses to work with them unless we are logged into our main profile? Has something changed recently or could we not previously view Unavailable movie titles while logged into a secondary profile?

Hey all, I'd like to confirm that the "error saving your data" message is back when needed -- wahoo! (For a number of months, we stopped receiving an error message when our list saves failed due to a timeout. Receiving a "saved successfully" message every time, including when the opposite was true -- not cool.) Possibly an improvement: The message may appear if your list size is within the upper bounds of what Netflix can handle but if a timeout occurs anyway. So if you get the message, feel free to try to save again -- it will probably save successfully. It just did for me with my Foreign Save list (currently at 421 titles or under the upper bound I've tested of 431 using Firefox). Just evidence that Netflix is always improving the system!

OK unfortunately as of today I have discovered that the Error Saved message has gone bye-bye again. I'm saving a slight change to my Foreign Save list that it should accept but instead a Successfully Saved message immediately appears -- though the change did not occur.

It embarrasses me to ask for this feature, but because it's happened more than once, I have to ask...

It would help me if there were a notification on a movie's info page that indicated that I have previously rented this particular DVD. Most movies I can remember having rented or not, but sometimes especially with stand up comedy, I've re-rented something I watched a while ago.

Just a simple gold seal icon or something to warn the user that they've already seen something would be nice.

Daniel, two things:

1) Do you rate movies after you see them? I know not everyone keeps up, but if you do, it's clear to see your rating stars at least -- plus at the top right of the movie page it says in big letters "You've rated this movie, now what?" [leave a note, write a review]

2) If you have rented a movie, the top right of the movie page does in fact say "You've returned this movie, now what?" followed by the date (for example, from one of my past rentals: "Last returned by you on: 06/21/06").

Will either of these two solutions work for you?

This isn't on the actual movie's page, but you can always check your rental history, especially if you're suspicious about a certain movie or comedian. That is the long way, though, as Robowriter's solution should also work.

I gotta admit, that is a little odd, but everyone has their own annoyances, I suppose. I'm just jealous that you have come around to re-watching things you've already rented; I've hardly made a dent in my queue. Of course, it doesn't help when I'm constantly adding to it....

Hanging out here won't help that Q number shrink, Calvin Salmon_lox! I keep finding titles suggested around these boards that look interesting and have to be added to my Q.

Indeed. I figure, with the size of my queue, even if I upped it to 3 at a time and was diligent in getting the dvds back in the mail circulation right away, it would take a few years to watch them all. And that's with no new additions, and ignoring any Instant Watching.

Not that I'm eager to work through my queue like a madman, I just sometimes consider the enormousness of my queue and realize that some items on it will have to wait a good long while to get watched.
