Gotta love the Godfathers of Metal. I'm going to argue that VooDoo Child by Jimi Hendrix was the first heaviest metal song. Jimi was Classic Metal through and through, but VooDoo Child was the birth of "Heavy Fucking Metal".

The Stooges was released in the Fall of 1969.
How about Iron Butterfly? In a Gadda Da Vida may have been the first heavy metal song that made it to AM radio, since it was Top 10 in the Summer of 1968.
Very early FM became popular overnight as people wanted to hear the full version (not the single edited for AM).
