Hi. My name's Jo, and I'm a film addict.

One of my greatest flaws (or strengths, depends how you look at it) is that I can find enjoyment out of 99% of the movies I watch. So why, I have wondered to myself for years, can't I find an ounce of enjoyment in the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid?

I have tried to watch it around 4 times, over a span of many years. I can never watch finish it. In fact, I fell asleep the other night watching it (note to reader: I am an insomniac who has not fallen asleep naturally more than 20 nights a year of my life without being awake for 3 days straight).

My point: Why do you love it? What's your favourite part? Quote? Glance or look that could mean a million things but you laugh/cry every time you see it?

I want to be inspired. Please help

Jo

I'm also one who tends to see the good in movies, and like almost everything I watch that isn't a legitimately downright bad movie. But I think it's healthy to have a few movies that you don't like, even if many others do.

oddly enough, i rewatched this last night and started a thread in the Classic Cinema Group.

Why do I love it? It's damn funny with some of the most infectious screen chemestry between Redford and Newman. And they feel real. Even Newman's goofball take on Butch just feels real.

My favorite scenes are the ones that don't advance the story, the bicycle scene and the photo collage. They both are examples of pure whimsy in an already lyrical movie.

the first time i saw B&S, i was really turned off by the episodic story. But the movie isn't to tell a story, but rather profile the friendship of these two men.

I wouldn't worry about it too much...
Maybe it's just one of those movies you don't connect with right now.
Watch it again 5 or 10 years from now, and see what you think then.

Do you like westerns ?
Maybe the film genre isn't your favorite...
Some people don't enjoy musicals.

Personally, I've always liked it.
I think it is a great "buddy" movie.
For me, George Roy Hill's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) does for westerns
what Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven (2001) does for crime caper movies.
Both movies make the film genres that they represent more accessible to a larger movie-going audience.

I thought this was one of Redfords best (Well, next to The Natural).
When I was a kid my dad rented this on VHS and had me watch it because he said it was a great movie about the western days and friendships in general. I found myself laughing at many of the quotes between Newman and Redford. I tried to watch this show with my daughter a few months ago and she laughed at a couple scenes, but it did not grab her attention either. I had her do a little research on Butch Cassidy and Sundance so she would know who they were in this world.....Seems that schools dont teach much about the wild west in history...... Anyway, after learning a little bit about them 2 she wanted to watch the film again and found it to be a bit more interesting and funny.
