It seems pretty straightforward to set up as many aliases as anyone would want on Ning and this community in particular. I was hoping to start a discussion about this and get people's thoughts on the subject.
Do you think many people are on here in different guises?
Do you think this practice is deceitful? Or not?
Why would people choose to adopt different aliases?
Yes, Professor, I agree with you, you can not play both sides of the fence nor should you have to devulge anything about yourself that is uncomfortable. The way I am on line is pretty much who I am to people who know me personally. I even put my real name and state out there. People who try to sabatoge someone's reviews have some real issues they need to deal with. When two people went over everyone of my reviews in one evening and marked unhelpful it must have taken lots of time. Honesty is always best in my opinion. Do you think if a person feels they must resort to deception they might have some serious issues going on in their life and this might make them feel safe? Even though, they are usually eventually found out.
OMG! You guys are totally freaking me out! I hate spiders! and sock puppets? wth? You are so using lingo I have never heard before and don't even know what it all is! lmao! *sniff* You are making me feel stupid! But I don't care, edumacate me, would ya? The only spiders I know of are the ones that I have an utter and total fear of, ya know, the kind with eight legs? 2McAbre you are way beyond computer literate, my Queen!
Thank you, I knew I could count on you 2McAbre. You are always educational for me! I do admit though, I think it is very weird to have a conversation with yourself. I do enough talking to myself in real life that I can't imagine typing arguements to myself on a keyboard. lol
Depends on the reason for changing and how open they are about it. If you just want a change or your name is a mix of your BF and your name and you split and you hate it now, yes I have heard that excuse. Change for sake of change is cool intent means everything. Changing avatars doesn't count in my mind you wanted a change of scenery not identity, identity is even cool as long as you are open about it. Now I do fully admit to several handles but never within the same community. For instance my online gaming, I try to as often as possible use my character name if anything that is more open it means they can find me not just in forums but on the game. Sometimes my typical handles are taken and I have to fall back on mirsulli which is usually always open like Xbox live Slappy and Rusalka were taken I had to use Mirsulli, had no choice. I have my original online identity rayne_clouds, I wanted just rayne but yeah so do 50 billion other people and adding _clouds didn't really help you have a million rayne_(fill in the blank) so to shorten it you see people call you Ray or Rayne but there are 10 others with that name it was just damn confusing. I have no problem announcing any and all of my handles though you can find me anywhere no big deal.
You already got a certain amount of anonymous to it all it is the internet for crying outloud, if you feel you need to hide yourself in an anonymous environment maybe we should fit you for a foil hat. If you can't take insults, crap, and harassment (minus downright threats and to a point even those) then call your internet provider, cancel your subscription now. If you are hiding your online personality then it is the same as doing it in RL there is a reason for it and other than witness protection, which not all of them are fully innocent, there is no reason for it than to be deceitful.
Like I said there are some legit reasons, I have an online persona for a whole different community my first character was Slappy but is now a mule to my hubby's character so I had to change and that ended up creating a new alias for me so to speak. I don't have the intent for it to be shady though it is just a different community I wouldn't make another profile here name it Rus or something else and then pretend like I am not me. I would like to think I am distinct enough that I would get caught and quickly. Then again I am me, I don't really care if someone hates my ass or my views so what GTFO it.
As to the drama floating around, air it or not that is up to the parties involved. This is my only suggestion figure it out and then drop it, move on. Preferably quicker than later. Quite honestly in a few weeks nobody will really care one way or another even quicker if two others have a brawl next. Even if you can't figure it out GET OVER IT, agree to disagree whatever. This should also be between them two, if you are having a great time mediating, or instigating fine, but they should ignore you. Hell me included ignore everything I just said it is advice you can take it or leave it.
Hell no it ain't my real name, but hell I have no worries about hiding it either especially seeing as all our real names are a google search away.
Actually wait technically Slappy is the only one that is truly real because it really was/is my nickname anymore the only one to use it occasionally is my husband but it is real.

LOL. Have you read some of the passive aggressive BS from these asshats posterior head ornaments?
I bet you they would be shocked to learn that anyone can read their PMs by simply pressing shift-F8 on their home page avatars.
