As kind of a a spinoff from the "The Women" thread, who are your favorite smart, strong, independent female movie characters who are neither badasses nor bimbos?
Just watched the Indian movie Dor (my review is under Most Recent Reviews for the time being). I gave this movie 5 stars even though it is something of a message movie. It doesn't take long to figure out which of the two female characters, Zeenat and Meera, is the strongest, but watch to find out if the weaker one finds strength, too. Both actresses are believable in their roles.
It is also a good introduction to Indian movies since it is 2.5 hrs long instead of the usual 3+ hrs, and has only one typical Bollywood dance so you get some of that flavor if you don't feel like watching people dancing to the whole soundtrack. (It of course has subtitles ;) ). The whole family can watch.

Some of my favorite women characters
Shirley Valentine- Shirley Valentine-Bradshaw
Murphy's Romance- Emma Moriarty flawed but I adore her
So Proudly we hailed- All of them
Best Years of our lives- Wilma Cameron, Milly Stephenson
Working Girl- Tess
Songcatcher-Lily Penleric
Norma Rae- Norma Rae
What's love got to do with it- Tina
Gorilla's in the mist-Dian Fossey
My absolute favorite but she's a little bimbo-y Born Yesterday- Billie Dawn .. Oh Judy, if only had lived longer, you should have done so many more movies!
As for playing diverse character roles I'd say Barbara Stanwick, Nichole Kidmen, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Samantha Morton come to mind. But Meryl Streep, Shirley Maclaine and Betty Davis pretty much rule in that catagory.
Debra Winger: Kit in The Sheltering Sky
Glenn Close: The World According to Garp
Juliette Binoche: Blue
Liv Ullman: Any Bergman film she ever made and Mindwalk
The characters that stands out for me are Frances McDormand's Marge Gunderson in Fargo & Keisha Castle-Hughes' Paikea in Whalerider. And, of course, Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor in Terminator.
I don't know bout Julia Roberts..she's always looking the same..playing the same.. america's sweetheart title is worn off. Erin Brockovich? ummm..boring..overated.. pushup bras doesn't equal great performance. wowww she took on the role of a cleavage wearing woman! umm.. so did Pretty woman.
Nicole Kidman in Lars von Trier's DOGVILLE.
Juliette Bincohe in Krzysztof Kielsowski's BLUE.
Patricia Neal in Robert Wise's THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. She saves the world for heaven's sake! (Though she passes out in fear...but I forgive her)
All the women in CARAMEL.
Mrs. Meryl Streep is by far the only actress who is mom, girlfriend, friend, gay hag, , Senator's mom, Evil magazine lady and everyone's envy for acting.
Her only match i would have to say is the Mrs. Glenn Close who can pierce a scene with her eyes. yum!
