I've run into the 2000-character limit when submitting a review once before, and I was able to whittle it down to shove it into the Netflix review system. This time I wrote a review with 3700 words, so I am not sure that is even possible, so I posted the review in the Bollywood and Indian Movie Group here instead of on Netflix site.
Does anyone else run into this limit every so often?
While that's a great a review and perfect analysis of that film, one thing I always keep in mind when posting reviews for public consumption on the NF website, is the attention span of the Netflix visitor. I think we get about 6-10 seconds with any viewer... then they're gone into the ether. So we need to hit them quickly.
Having said that, there is certainly a place for longer reviews such as what you have written.
How about something like this as a quick sound-bite analysis: Taal progresses quickly in the opening, unlike other Indian movies that often get bogged down in an hour or more of expository detail. The lead characters, were nuanced enough for me to suspend disbelief, and Manav's father Tarababu (Alok Nath) gave a lot of life to the countryside poet father. Speaking of countryside, the gorgeous mountainscapes of Himachal Pradesh dominate the opening, as in the much better movie Dor. Complaining about an Indian movie being three hours long is somewhat like complaining that it has subtitles, but I felt all 179 minutes of it. In short, if this is your first Indian movie, it could well be your last, unless you just want to look at Aishwarya
You reminded me of something, here, Spindaddydad. I should try to make the first sentence of the review a review in itself, so the reader can drop out of reading at any time. I did that with the rewrite, and finally managed to get the review under 2000 characters.
I like the creative challenge that the limit imposes, personally. It forces you to distill out the essence of your impressions of the film. Definitely not a good forum for comprehensive analysis, but that's what this place is for!
Even though I'm in my forties, I guess I'm still a part of the "microwave" generation. Instant gratification is what we're all about. Shorter reviews, shorter chapters in books, apparently shorter television shows (how else can Robot Chicken or shows that are one-third commercials be explained?). Here's the outline I usually follow for my own reviews: 1. Like/Dislike; 2. Why?
Now I may go on to describe the things I liked in a movie I didn't, or vice versa, but that's about it. When I first joined NetFlix, I was doing the movie summary as well, until I figured out it was unnecessary. Not having the most organized of minds, I still sometimes go on tangents, such as the fact that Angela Lansbury was a dish when she made Gaslight, but that's just for fun.
