Has anyone else had a problem returning movies lately? I haven't had much of an issue with returns disappearing (probably 4 or 5 in the eight years I've been a member), but my last 3 movies have all "gone missing". I'm starting to feel guilty. I mailed 2 of them together, and they never showed up. Now I mailed another last week, and while they usually get there in a day, this one has not shown up either. Is Netflix having a problem with their returns procedure, or am I the only one having this issue?

If this is so out of the ordinary, you may be experiencing a postal problem, I would contact netflix customer service and see what they say and whether or not you should start looking into Mr. Postmaster General and alert them.

I just had this recently happen. I sent 2 movies Friday (today is Wednesday) and only one was received. I sent one yesterday and it was received with one of the two that I had sent a few days prior. I'm worried about it being lost in the mail. What happens when they are reported lost? (Sorry, I haven't yet made it to a post that had that answer, I still have a lot of lurking to do)

I just signed up on 5/18/08; The movies shipped quick, I sent them back on 5/21/08 and NF still hasn't received them. The first 3 movies I get and they've gone missing. I "report(ed) problem" with the link on my queue but should I call NF and/or the post office? The NF center they are being returned to is only about a 45 minute drive from me and I've never had mail take more then 3 days (usually 2) to be delivered to that area.

1. Mailing from inside the Post Office through the drop chute is the safest way. Leaving it in your mailbox with the flag up is usually fine unless there is a theft problem in your area.

2. Putting the sleeve back in the red mailer so that the bar code shows through the window might make a difference.

3. You could call your Post Office and ask them what times DISPATCH or mail pick up is. If there is more than one pickup per day and you mail it so that it gets on the 2d or later pickup, it might cause Netflix to process it in a day later than if it made the early pickup.
a. If you usually receive your mail after 3 pm or thereabouts, chances are the movie is going out on the 2d pickup.
b. Saturday pick up times will probably be somewhat different than weekdays.

This may or may not help in your situation.

1. contact your local post office - sounds like something funny going on. Netflix has to check in every movie they get every day - they don't leave until they do.
2. click here to go to usps complaint site sometimes this kind of complaint does more if your local usps is not helpful.
3. definately mail from blue usps secure box
4. ask your hub if you drop off on fri/sat if it doesn't go to local usps proccessing center, but a main/larger and farther away hub - that adds a day.

a. Hi. When you reported problem - you marked as lost, right? did you ask for replacements? have they come?

Hello, thank you for the responses.

I live in a condo and the our mail is keyed lock box style with a slot in one for outgoing mail that only the mail person has a key for, as far as I know. It's about a cm wide slot and the mail falls a little so I think it would very difficult for unauthorized people to get at. I placed the movies in "outgoing" about 6 am so they must have been picked up that day, the 21st. Mail is usually picked up/delivered about 1pm during the week and 11 am on Sat. I had hoped this would be safer then a personal box with the red flag, since anyone walking by could just grab.

I've never had any problems mailing letters or anything from my home before, nor have I heard of any neighbors having any problems.

Each had its own NF envelop with the barcode matching the slot.

There are 2 post offices in the town I live(many mail rooms as well), and while I don't know the proper terminology, one is the main hub for the county I live in as I understand it (had a friend that had to travel here from half way across the state to interview/train for a postal position; while this was a few years ago, she told me it was one of the 4 or 5 biggest in the state, and her mother was a postal worker for 25 years so I believe she was dead on with info.) Both would be at least a few miles out of the way for me to drop off future returns, one center of town, one opposite side and I go in the other direction for work and even shopping.

After I reported them missing (5/27 ~10am), NF was great and sent me the next ones in my Q. I got them today, no problems. I called NF after got back from the mail and checked my account to see if they had been "found" yet. Still nothing...

The person I talked to said it was a very unusual for it to take this long for them to receive but not totally unheard of. I asked if i should call usps to report it, he said they would likely just tell me about the possibility of mis-routing and that it was wasn't a big deal yet. Then he suggested that I give the movies I just received one more try through the same home mailing and if any problems happened with them, to find another place to mail future movies from.

I will follow the link you gave, Evil Herbivore, and report this to usps and most likely use a Blue drop box from now on even though NF suggested giving it one more try from home.

Whats the longest you've heard of it taking returns to take?

Thank you for your time, sorry it ended up so long but I wanted to clarify exactly what I did and my situation for any further advice.

no problem! longest i've heard is about 5-6 days from a rural area usually.
sometimes from a big city if the route has changes to postpeople.
that's such a bummer!

Netflix is thankfully good about that stuff. Ive been a member since 2004 and since sometimes I go in spurts where I rent infrequently, I suppose I'm a high profiting customer. I'm guessing that's why my account has never been suspended. Ive had about 10 discs in total get lost I think over the years. The worst time was when I put three movies at a time in the box and NONE of the three got sent back. I was petrified, as this had happened with another movie I sent just the month previous from another mailbox, figuring they would suspend me. Fortunately they did not.

NF received all my movies, 1 on 5/30 and the other 2 on 6/2. So, I'm very happy about that. thanks everyone

Wow! Not that I don't feel bad for folks whose movies get lost. But I must be rather lucky! Of course I've only been a member for about a year.

We've had the same carrier for all 12 years I've owned my condo, he picks up right from my box by my front door (unsecured), in fact I asked him one day if he minded and he said,

"Nope, not at all, in fact with NF movies they will get back faster if the carrier takes them!"

I said "Really"? and his answer was that "All the carriers keep the NF movie returns separated and they got dropped in a special bin so they would not be processed through the auto sorters. The only time they put a movie in a different bin if its not going to the local DC."

If my carrier gets then Monday they always are received by 10 am Tuesday, and my next movies are received by me on Wednesday.
