What is everyone's preference?
I prefer full screen. I can't stand widescreen. So, that brings me to my question:

Why does Netflix only send us widescreen??

I'll get used to wide screen one day, I'm sure. =\

I have listened to those of you who told me to use the zoom and I totally understand what you mean about the differences. So, I am now glad to say that I am a Widescreen fan =) Full screen.. eh. It's alright.

To be honest, I am very pleased that wide screen has become the standard.

The shortage of full screen might be due to extra costs. Most films are shot with a big aspect ratio. For a wide screen movie, they can just transfer the original theatrical release to DVD, as is. For a full screen movie, there is the extra time and effort of going through and deciding which part of each frame to crop. Some studios, like SONY, would love people to buy new wide screen televisions. They have no incentive to provide full screen format. I am not in the film industry. These are just guesses.

Sorry, but wide screen is the way the creator intended.
Agreed!
Ditto! (Or is that Triple!) If it was made in widescreen that's the way the Director wishes it to be seen--and I like it, too. (Wow--maybe I really did learn something in my film class! LOL) I always wonder what I'm missing in those edited little pieces on the edges of the film that you can't see when it's converted to the full screen versions. But I live with a person (hubby) who likes the full screen version cause the black bands on the top and bottom bother him. Go figure! =-)

Exactly how I am. I don't mind the wide screen in theaters, because the screen is already wide enough that those bars don't take up half the screen.
People tend to watch movies in the dark so the black bars shouldn't be that noticeable. You could also mention that with the full screen, you are actually missing part of the movie and in some instances, it can change the whole feel of a particular scene.
You mean Gawd???
Wide screen is my overwhelming preference. Like et said, that's how the creators intended their work to be seen.

Out of curiosity, why do you prefer full screen Kristyn?
Because all the TV screens in my home aren't that wide to begin with and when I watch a wide screen movie, the picture just looks way too small/narrow, and it is just really annoying. =\
widescreen has better audio (DTS,7.1,etc.) than full screen most of the time, so i go for ws when i have a choice
If your dvd player has a Zoom function, you can view any disk full-screen.
Widescreen always always always.

If you watch a fullscreen version of a standard film, you are simply not getting the whole picture.
