Shows that only had one season or less, but should have lived on for years.
My pick would be Earth 2.
The story lines were well planned out and the characters were distinct.
I loved that it was not another Sci-Fi show that depended on
half-naked women and crazy space creatures that you only saw for one episode.
I forgot all about the Isaak show, it was quite terrific. Too bad Netflix doesn't have it. It's not listed at Amazon, either but here it is. I suspect that may not be a legit release, as it is "region-free."
Lone Gunman was cute, but since it was more conspiracy theory and less paranormal, I've often wondered how it went over with X files viewers.
I do think that Lone Gunman did one of the most brilliant writing/casting things I've seen. By adding Jimmy, they had a "dumb" character so the "smart" ones could regularly explain what was going on, and it still made sense. I hate when characters on law/forensic shows explain things to each other that if they didn't already know, they wouldn't have that job! Those shows need a "Jimmy."
Probably one of the most original animated shows and one of my favorites was unexpectedly killed off halfway through the second season. Invader Zim was vastly unique, creative, and hilarious, and had huge potential, but never found it's audience during it's initial run. It now has a large cult following, but will most likely never come back.
ARGH! I can't believe no one has mentioned Freaks and Geeks, it's such a good show and it only lasted the one season. If only it had been release NOW. With all the Judd Apatow hype, I'm sure it would still be on the air.
Another good one was Wonderfalls produced by Tim Minear who also brought us the goodness that is Angel and Firefly, and a couple of other good but short lived shows like Drive and The Inside. How they can cancel any show with Nathan Fillion and/or Adam Baldwin is beyond me.

Firefly. I still till this day cannot figure out why that didn't last. Everyone I know who finally watches it scratches their head. Even the movie Serenity to tie things up was great.
My wife and I liked two little-mentioned, short-lived sitcoms from the 1990s: Debi Mazar's "Temporarily Yours" (1997) and Christina Applegate's "Jesse." Mazar's show lasted less than a season and "Jesse" ran from 1998-2000. Both leads were decent but their shows suffered from weak and unconvincing supporting characters, much like Ted Danson's "Becker."
I thought there were a lot of good comedies destroyed in the 90's by the constant shifting of timeslots. Jesse was on of my favorites. Was it the first to use the technique of showing traffic in superspeed as a bridge between scenes?
Dead Like Me...(brilliant pay tv show that only lasted 2 seasons)
and
I loved the idea of that show Nevada...(was that the name of it) the mystery and chance to win if you solved the plot....that was a Matt Daemon, Ben Afflect brain child...I was bummed when they ended it quick.
