A Netflix Community

I found question/answer in Netflix website:
Q:Can I see subtitles or closed captions while watching movies instantly on my PC?

A:Foreign-language movies watched instantly on your PC will have subtitles. We don't currently provide Closed Captioning, nor subtitling of English language movies, but you’ll find those on most of our DVDs.

This is year 2008... still no available to add a new feature CC in Netflix's movie soft program??? Hey, NetFlix Community... any suggestions?

Not all foreign movie titles have closed captioned. As to CC on the other than foreign titles, it probably has to do with the software that they're running the films on, which is 3rd party.

Yes, it have to be in software program but Netflix should add the CC feature in for the deaf people or Netflix should get different software movie that already have the CC built in. Seem that movie software is out of date.

Considering the studio DRM requirements, the list of software they can use is a VERY short list.

Considering the American with Disabilities Act's requirements, however, it may behoove them to consider using movie software that allows for closed captions for the hard of hearing! (I am not a lawyer [yet], I am certainly not YOUR lawyer [or Netflix's lawyer], and I am not permitted to give legal advice.) The necessary disclaimer out of the way, I'll go on to note that there are an increasing number of cases where plaintiffs are arguing that websites need to be ADA compliant. I don't think it is a stretch to think that this might extend to Netflix's streaming service.

I don't think the ADA requires closed captioning for movies, if it does, it shoudn't. IF it did, it would essentially be equating closed captioning for movies with ramps for people who can't walk. That is absurd.

Agreed. It's a DVD service and the DVD CC is only limited by what the studios put out there. Instant Watch is not part of the contract and is basically a bonus that could be removed at any time without affecting the implied or explicit contract between the parties. I think it would be wonderful if it were available as well, but I also think people who get litigious at the drop of a hat and stir crap need a reality check and a slap upside the head.

Beg to differ, the ADA is about equal access: handicapped folks must be allowed to do anything nonhandicapped folks do. (They can do it if allowed!) You can say watching movies is trivial compared to transportation but if so (1) Braille books have been available for decades to all blind persons and (2) give up your movies until they are universally accessible! It's not a software technology question it's a matter of political and economic will. Luckily it is IW and an extra to the DVD rental contract but I hope it is resolved soon. It's not that it can't be done, just that the choice so far has been not to do it.

IW hasn't really been perfected yet, and there are still a lot of glitches in addition to close captioning. I'm sure they'll get to it eventually, but they can't fix everything at once.

Subtitles that can be switched on or off would require two streams, a film stream and a text stream which would be overlaid on the video. It might not be very hard to do, but at this early stage it's probably viewed as an unecessary complication -- a feature that can be added later if demand warrants.

Yeah let the marketplace decide not equal-access federal law (not!)...

Hey, Netflix Services, if you apply the CC feature in the movie software and available to us, I am sure you will more and more new deafs and hard-of-hearings sign up to use the Netflix. Hurrry, Hurry....

This is truly an issue. They should work on that ASAP!
