After a spell of three months without a satisfying rental..... a few good films have finally fallen into my hands and were consumed greedily by my undernourished soul. Your results may vary.
Charlie Wilson's War - Tom Hanks, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Julia Roberts are all great in this highly fictionalized story about how one man's actions led to the defeat of the Russians in Afghanistan.
The Orphanage - Terrific horror film styled after the classic films of the 60's, 70's, and early 80's. Full of Gothic terror and devoid of the cgi creepy-crawlies that dominate the horror films of today. A woman decides to reopen the orphanage where she spent her childhood with her husband and her adopted child Simon, but the house has many secrets. Possibly the best horror I have seen in a decade.
The Backwoods - Set in the rural mountains of Spain and drawing heavily on films like Deliverance..... The Backwoods delivers with an atmosphere of nostalgia and a great performance from Gary Oldman.
Upcoming I agree with you totally (at least on the first 2). As a supplement to Charlie Wilson's War, you may want to try The True Story of Charlie Wilon's War (it's a documentary)
I loved the Orphanage too as I do almost everything Del Toro does (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy)
Just added The Backwoods to my queue. Sounds like something right up my alley.
I loved The Orphanage and I just got Backwoods in my mailbox today and am very much looking forward to it as I am a huge Gary Oldman fan and he doesn't do enough work for me anymore!
I was planning on putting Charlie Wilson's War about 300 down on my list. It was a good movie? Worth checking out sooner? I will check out Spindaddydad's recommendation (documentary). Thanks!
