We all know the place in pop culture history occupied by shows like That Girl, Mary Tyler Moore, and All in the Family. Which shows from the 1980s to today do you consider socially significant, and why?
real world is typically credited as the first reality show.
where are the talk shows? springer, oprah, regis & kelly, donahue, dr, phil, geraldo... who else brought us KKK members, beauty tips, dna tests, and lie detector test results? a melting pot of social issues delivered in one hour and moderated by loud, annoying wannabe celebrities (oprah aside).
I think the fact that America can rally behind and cheer for a serial killer with his own code of ethics and morals really shows that our country's going in the right direction. Great for voyeurism, and for vicariously feeding that evil voice in the back of your head that criticizes you for doing what you have to do, not what you want to do.
Well, the Roman Empire eventually had to end too... Pessimistic me... At the same time, in the 50's it seems to me that movies, news and television were so perfect and Pollyanna-ish that it created an upcoming consciousness that began to realize that not all life was perfect and that art would then reflect that new idea. Maybe now the pendulum has swung. Or do we have farther to go? Doesn't make things good or bad, just at a different point in history. What is 'good' or 'bad' seems to be the small daily choices we each make in our lives. ( Find your zen :) )I'm pretty sure that there hasn't been an upsurge in serial killers.
