A Netflix Community

I'd like to disable the instant watch feature. We find it's too easy for the kids (adults too, actually) to spend too much time in front of the screen. I would rather make our Netflix viewing not so "instant" but I don't see how to remove the feature. Note: I'm using the Mac beta version. Maybe it has some limitations at the moment?

The instant watch feature is still in its infancy. At some point, perhaps when it becomes a more significant source of revenue, they might add parental limits and controls. For now, you can create a profile for the kids which won't have IW at all, but profiles may go away at some point (or be reincarnated in a different form). It's also possible to view all Instant Watch activity through "Your Account" page, so you currently have the ability to check up on whether the kids (or spouse) are following the limits you've given them. That page may not be 100% accurate, but it will help.

It is not a trivial job to add and enforce such limits to Netflix, it would piss more people off to do a half-assed job of it. It also may not be practical considering the very small percentage of users who would take advantage of it, and the insignificant number who would actually drop their Netflix account because of it.

Wow...is all the sarcasm and badgering really necessary? He was just asking a question.

Yes. Look at it another way, ever since this forum was created, there have been numerous complaints from Mac users (not all, mind you) about how unfair it is that they do not have access to the Instant Watch features of Netflix. Netflix's own blog is inundated with complaints about the lack of Mac support as far as Instant Watch is concerned. They bitched. They whined. They threatened. We listened. We ignored. We badgered?

Fast forward many months later and hundreds more of posts bitching about no Instant Watch for Mac users. Now, we are at the very early Beta stage of Instant Watch for Mac users. This is something that someone has to opt in for. Netflix does not inflict this on anyone unknowingly. Surely, someone at this point in time would already know what Instant Watch is all about even if they are on a Mac and were previously unable to use the feature.

The original poster is not complaining about the quality of Instant Watch. The OP is not complaining about the Silverlight software. The OP is not complaining about the selection of movies available on Instant Watch. The OP is complaining that Netflix made Instant Watch available to Mac users (something that hundreds of people before him has been bitching about not being able to do) and the OP can not opt out of it after signing up for the beta testing. The OP claims this is not a self control issue nor is it a parental issue. If someone does not have enough discipline to not click on Instant Watch and not sit their ass in front of their computer, should Netflix then play NetNanny? Do you see where the sarcasm and badgering is coming from?

(Disclaimer: I have never used a Mac and not familiar with it's programs)

To the original poster, is it possible to uninstall software on a Mac? If so, then uninstall Silverlight. No amount of clicking on Instant Watch will allow you to watch a movie if you don't have the software that allows it installed on your computer. After uninstalling, it is then up to you to enforce the rule in your household that nobody is allowed to install Silverlight on your computer. Once again, I guess it falls back under discipline and self-control. If none of this is possible, then might I suggest you call Netflix customer service? They just might have a trick or two up their sleeve that can help you.

Shorter AlanTheAntagonizer: The OP is an amoeba.

I could do short replies but seeing the trend in that Prop 8 thread, I thought the new "in" thing was to reply with as many sentences and paragraphs possible. :-)

Yes, that does seem to be the new trend.

But I wasn't slighting you, kind sir...just distilling your post for easy consumption by our significant ADD constituent.

Is it my imagination or didn't your avatar have a beard and an eye patch at one point? Random, I know, but I just had to ask. :-)

Bored or finally have time to catch up on forum responses? ;-)

I think sarcasm is always necessary and should be used whenever possible.

I'm sorry .. i know that there is the famous saying " there is no such thing as a dumb question " ........ But come on ... This is one of the most retarded questions I've ever read on here. Given the reason for why they wanted it disabled.
