Anybody else having this problem? I am CONTINUALLY receiving Dark Shadows series discs damaged and Unplayable!!! Talk about frustrating!! :( Even the Replacement discs they send have been damaged! That happened 5 times in a row!!!!! At this rate, I wont be able to finish watching the series. If I would have known this, I would have just bought the series. Netflix, get it together!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Every disc I have received in the past month has been damaged!!!!!! I`m getting ready to cancel my membership.

The news footage here was on a regular segment about customer service complaints concerning a few local businesses, being addressed, and, they also went inside the inspection department and showed the`inspection` (or Lack of) of thousands of DVDs, with workers barely inspecting, but just very quickly sorting through the heep, just like you stated. At that rate, no real damage could be noticed unless the disc was broken in half, or in pieces. The discs I`ve been getting are noticably in bad condition and cracked in several places. They need to have a more thourogh way of inspecting. And in the footage of the workers, they weren`t actually inspecting; just going thru a speedy routine.

Yes, you are correct. A better inspection process would be ideal. But they probably weighed the costs associated with it and decided it's more cost effective to just replace the discs as they get broken. People would not be happy if the subscription rates were raised to cover the cost of extra inspection and/or sturdier packaging.

For me, the inspection process is perfect with a 99.99% accuracy rate as I have only received maybe 5 damaged discs in 10 years of membership. But then again, I haven't rented Dark Shadows and their flimsy discs.

You are doing the right thing in calling NF and your PO as they need to work through the problem. They also have Facebook help page and twitter help page. However, I think your issue will soon be over as the DS discs will all be gone. I doubt they would buy any more from that manufacturer and will go into saved status at the bottom of everyone's queue.

I know that watching video of people flipping the discs over in about a half a second doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in the QC process if you can't see the whole picture. I've spent a lot of time in our distribution centers and I can tell you that I have a very high degree of confidence that we will catch a problem - as long as the customer reports it via the website.

The folks doing the inspection do catch chips, cracks, and scratches on a regular basis. Those discs get kicked out to be reviewed and determined whether they're savable or not. But let's say the person opening the disc misses a crack/scratch/chip. The disc then gets scanned, and if it comes back as having been reported as damaged, it gets kicked out and manually inspected a second time. So that's three total checks to see if the disc looks okay.

Let's say there's nothing visibly wrong with the disc, and we put it back in inventory. If it gets reported damaged enough times, even if there's nothing visibly wrong, we still scrap it.

So there are 4 checks in the process total to make sure the disc is okay. The only trouble is, if people don't report the problem online, it makes it a lot easier to miss because it only gets one check.

Which distribution center are you referring to?

Memphis, TN. distribution center. Also the video footage the local TV news here showed the inspection room and the people had a HUGE heep of discs by their desk to sort. Hundreds. Nothing like this picture shows...and they were flying thru them faster than possible to catch any damage. They weren`t ``inspecting``, they were very quickly pulling the DVD out of the envelope and moving on to the next one.

That is the inspection. It's not comprehensive, but it catches major breakages, some unreported cracks, discs flagged or marked by the returner and possibly major screwups such as returning an audio cd.

That's good enough, almost always. It doesn't work for discs that are especially fragile, but apparently little would (other than sending someone out to inspect the disc at your home).

My guess is that there is nothing abnormal about your DC and the clueless muckrakers at your local station just have nothing better to do.

Their time would be better spent inspecting local slaughterhouses who have equally casual standards yet who also have a high success rate (but their failures are slightly more scary than a broken Dark Shadows disc).

All you have to do is call them. I went through a spell where every shipment had at least one damaged disk. I called and they sent a replacement plus a alternate bonus disc each time it happened. During that period I also had a reduction in my bill for the hassle. So then call them, keep the damaged one until you get a working one (to make sure they don’t send it back to you) call them to get your bonus disk and any discount, or keep complaining here to a bunch of customers who can‘t help-which is a more useful way to spend your time?

LOL You think I haven`t called them? I`ve been on the phone with them many times the past 2 weeks. Sure they send out a replacement...And its damaged too! Last week they sent me a replacement.. and it was damaged and unplayable and so were the next 5 they sent! Thats why its so frustrating! Right now I`m waiting on a replacement that should arrive tomorrow, and I`m betting it will be the same. And I`m not continuing to complain here as you say... I`m just responding back to the responses I`m getting. :)

At what point..... Never mind, I don't really want to know.

and I`m betting it will be the same.

If that is what you are betting, is the goal now to deplete their supply?

Gambling is one of the few vices I don't dabble in...But I probably would wager real money on an Einstein quote I heard once in this particular case. Something about expectations.

Have you ever thought about making this post in response to, say, any of the 80 odd posts in the No August, September or October ratings thread?

No, I haven't.

The one that comes to mind for me concerns the abundance of hydrogen.
