Can anyone explain from a business standpoint why shipping movies is more economical than instant stream? it seems Netflix would rather ship movies.................

First off, Netflix doesn't decide what movies are on Instant Watch, the distributors do. Distributors make more money off DVD sales, so they don't want their most popular films out on Instant Watch where you can watch them anytime. People will be less likely to buy new releases if they can just watch it instantly anytime. DVD Rentals on the other hand are a one time thing for the most part since you have to ship it back, so if it's a movie you want to watch over and over, you'll be forced to buy it.
Secondly, while I agree there's a lot of crap on Instant Watch, there's a lot of really great stuff to. Though a lot of it isn't really mainstream blockbuster stuff, but still really good and entertaining. It can be a bit difficult to find the good stuff sometimes, but there's a group here called Watch Instant - Treasure Hunters dedicated to finding good things to watch instantly.
* A Few Good Men 1992
* Eyes Wide Shut 1999
* The Shawshank Redemption: Special Edition 1994
* Barton Fink 1991
* Braveheart 1995
* Good Night, and Good Luck 2005
* Miracle at St. Anna 2008
* Powder Blue 2009
* Full Metal Jacket 1987
* Wendy and Lucy 2008
* WALL-E 2008
* Let the Right One In 2008
* Ronin 1998
* Die Hard 1988
* The Big Lebowski 1998
* Best in Show 2000
* Man on Wire 2008
* Serenity 2005
Some are good, some are bad. But hardly as bad as you make it sound. And yes, like Yneos said above, Netflix would love to offload the new releases and such onto Instant Watch, but the studios won't dare upset their DVD release schedule.

I always get a kick out of people who say the movies on Instant Watch are bad. Instant Watch has a variety of choices - just like in DVDs. It has Award winners, independent, foreign, great movies, bad movies - just like in DVDs. It's kind of like if I said why does Baskin Robbins have so many terrible flavors! They don't have terrible flavors - just some I don't like. Instant Watch has movies you don't like but others will. If you named 10 movies you think are great someone on here will think they are terrible. Here's a couple of links you can use to search for Instant Watch movies:
Instant Watch is a great way to try something new without using a DVD space. If you like horror - try classic or foreign horror. If you like westerns - try spaghetti westerns. It's easy to turn them off if you don't like them.
Here's a few more I didn't see on Spin's list:
The Good the Bad and The Ugly
12 Monkeys
1984
Aguirre: The Wrath of God
Audition
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Bonnie and Clyde
Cashback
Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams
A Christmas Story
Clay Pigeons
Cool Hand Luke
Das Boot
Dog Day Afternoon
Enemy of the State
