Adventures in Cannabis Hemp=The Dutch have a reputation as tolerant and this 60-minute documentary set in Amsterdam, where mariquana, hash and prostitution are legal shows why. Includes visits to "coffeehouses" where these substances are sold, interviews with people involved in the trade, including the development of industrial hemp.
Amsterdam is considered the most multiracial city in the world and an estimated 800,000 Dutch people use mariquana and hash. It is also a beautiful tourist destination. Entertaining--4 stars.
Oldboy=original and gripping thriller from Korea that is just as good as many reviewers here have said. A man who has been imprisoned for 15 years sets out to find his captors upon release with the help of a sympathetic waitress. The dubbing is terrible so I recommend choosing English subtitles in setup if you rent this. 4 1/2 - 5 stars.
For Sunday: The Fugitive=one of the best TV drama series that hasn't dated at all since it aired in the 60s.
Later in the week: The Devil's Miner=doc about the harrowing conditions Bolivian silver miners work in; Ballot Measure 9=doc about how conservatives tried to pass a measure to allow discrimination vs gays in Oregon and failed; Slacker Uprising-Michael Moore film about his nationwide tour to get new, mostly young people, to register and vote in 2004; and a couple of World Series baseball DVDs.
I was working in the basement, (not Pihkal's Basement however) and popped The Terminator into the VCR. I ended up not working much and instead getting drawn into that great film. For my money the best movie of its kind ever made.

Kidulthood - 2 stars - I was drawn to this new release by the word "gritty" in the synopsis but I guess it wasn't gritty enough cause I saw this a few days ago and the only thing I remember about it is I didn't like it.
Sukiyaki Western Django - 2 stars - I really thought I'd like this - was thinking it would be like the son of Yojimbo and A Fist Full of Dollars but it was so boring that I fell asleep a couple of times. The costumes and sets looked good but in my opinion the acting was terrible, the accents horrible and the cinematography was a joke. Yes, I know it was supposed to be a parody but I didn't think it was an interesting parody. Determined to finish, just to see if it improved, I had to fast forward a few times and it never improved. This looked like a movie Tarantino, Miike and the cast really had fun making but it wasn't fun for me to watch. I should have believed rottentomates.com's 57% rating. Ultraviolet - 4 stars - Fun Sci-Fi & Fantasy with Milla Jovovich.
True Blood - 5 stars - This HBO series is sure to be canceled - it's too good - all the good ones get canceled. Carnival of Souls - 3 stars Nice little classic horror.
Up next: M, The Sacrifice and maybe The Great Train Robbery on Hulu.com or The Man Who Never Was on Netflix instant watch.
Just watched a couple old Japanese films that I had dvr'd off of IFC in the past few weeks, sadly neither is available on DVD.
Three Outlaw Samurai is a fantastic film about three ronin who take up the cause to improve the lives of some peasants. It was Hideo Gosha's (Sword of the Beast, Goyokin) first film and one that definitely deserves the Criterion treatment.
Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell is just as gloriously bad as that title would suggest. Here's the synopsis..."The survivors of a plane crash in a remote area are attacked by blob-like alien creatures that turn their victims into blood-thirsty vampires." Lol, oh my. Not only that, the whole thing has a anti-Vietnam message that's just completely silly. At one point, one of the characters asks another what he does for a living. "I'm a researcher of space biology." Space biology?! Yeah, and I'm a water geologist. The space biologist goes on to refer to himself as a "scientist" at least a half dozen times. This is just fried cheese city, and I loved it. Most definitely deserves a DVD release.
Here's a shot of the "vampire", who looks more like a Japanese Liberace to me, which makes it even more peculiar that they'd put a vagina on his face.
