Things We Lost in the Fire 4 stars. This on kinda pulls at the old heart strings with all that happens in the move. Good story, good acting and it's one of those deals that it could very well happen to anybody.
Thats exactly how a feel about Who's nailin Palin. Kinda pulls at the old heart strings. And it's one of those deals that could happen to anybody.
Well maybe not anybody you would have to be pretty limber for some of it.
To Kill a Mockingbird 4 1/2 stars. I finally got to finish this movie yesterday morning, I always missed the last 45 minutes of it. i.e. had to got to work, something else came up, etc. A great example of an early crime drama.
Monty Python In the Beginning is an hour of watching Neil Innes comment on sketches from Do Not Adjust Your Set and At Last, the 1948 Show. It's an hour I'll never get back. Okay, 55 minutes I won't get back and the Four Yorkshireman sketch.
The Gamers: Dorkness Rising A very low budget movie about gamers (of the fantasy role-playing variety) I'm not a gamer so I wasn't really the target audience for this movie, but I still enjoyed it. You could tell the actors were really "green" and their line delivery at the beginning was pretty shaky, but their pulled it off at the end. It's definitely good for some nerdy laughs. 3 stars

The King A very dark and disturbing movie with Gael Garcia Bernal playing the bastard child of a preacher who seeks out his dear old dad and wackiness ensues. This movie starts off with a really deliberate pace which is good for setting the tense tone, but the more it goes on, you wonder just where the hell they are going with it and you just know it's not going to end well for anyone involved. Gael Garcia Bernal gives another multi-layered performance as you slowly realize how much of a sociopath he really is. It was pretty depressing but I liked Gael so I gave it 3 stars also.
I just finished Satyricon, off to write my review.....
What I'm going to watch this weekend (have at home or is shipping):

The bridge

The Irish Empire (both discs)

Hindle Wakes

Todd Browning's Freaks

I look at this list and think What the hell was I thinking when I queued these in this order? I do want to see them all, but that's a hell of a lineup for a holiday weekend. So I threw a Fred and Ginger movie at the top of my queue. Maybe I'll get that by Saturday.
Some of the better ones I've seen in the last 10 days:

Stop-Loss=powerful military drama about a highly decorated Iraq War sergeant who decides to go AWOL when he receives stop loss orders back to Iraq on the very day his enlistment is supposed to end. Great acting and a great job of casting the right actors for the right parts. Ryan Phillipe and Abbe Cornish star. 5 stars.

Ballot Measure 9=almost a forerunner to Prop 8, this documentary concerns a measure put on the Oregon ballot in the early 90s to take away most civil rights for gays. 4 stars.

Slacker Uprising=Michael Moore's cross-country tour in 2004 to register and motivate young people, mainly at college campuses, to get out and vote. 4 1/2 stars.

Oldboy=just as good as many members here have said. 4 1/2 stars

Encounters at the End of the World=Werner Herzog's fascinating doc about the adventurous and independent idealists who live and work at the South Pole, probably the most desolate spot on the planet. 4-4 1/2 stars.

Priceless=lighthearted French romantic comedy starring Audrey Tautau. She plays an attractive seductress who preys on rich men. She mistakes a lowly hotel bartender for one of those men and, by the time she realizes the mistake, she and the bartender have grown smitten with each other. 3 1/2 stars.

Coming up: Nana(Japan); Better Than Sex; Shadow Company=doc about the private contractors that many consider mercenaries operating in Iraq.
I watched Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.
I liked it. It wasn't the greatest movie, but it was fun to watch.
Lot's of car chases in the beginning and after about an hour of that the movie picks up.
There are a few funny scenes and the ending was unexpected.
3 stars
LBJ: The Early Years - 5 stars - I can't say if this movie about LBJ's life prior to becoming president is complete and accurate but I enjoyed the story of how he began in politics and how politics changed him. Randy Quaid as LBJ and Patti LuPone as Lady Bird were perfect and the show kept my attention the whole time. I highly recommend this but you have to act fast if you want to see it on Instant Watch because it expires December 1.
The Diary of Anne Frank
- 3 stars - I'd seen this before but it was available to Watch Instantly until Nov. 30 so I watched it. Great story.
JFK: Special Edition - 3 stars - Another movie I've seen before but caught on cable. It's available to Watch Instantly on NF.
Death Rides a Horse - 3 stars - A good spaghetti western with Lee Van Cleef and John Phillip Law.
Encounters at the End of the World - 4 stars - Werner Herzog's documentary of Antarctica. If you rent this be sure and watch the extras which include a commentary by Herzog and 2 short films.

Witchfinder General - 4 stars - Vincent Price hunting witches. Another I had seen before but I like it and it's expiring on NF to WI Nove 30.
The Barefoot Contessa 3 stars - Humphry Bogart and Ava Gardner. I thought the story was dated but worth it to see Gardner and Bogart. On WI expiring Nov. 30.
Woyzeck - 5 stars - I rewatched this Herzog / Kinski movie that I own but it's also available on NF Instant Watch. It's one of my favorite Kinski performances.
Thanks for the tip, Aces!
I'm going to watch "Encounters at the End of the World" sometime today.
I'll be sure to check out the 2 DVD extras before mailing it back in.
Also:
Tropic Thunder - 4 stars - This is hilarious and I recommend it highly. Rottentomatoes gives it 85% fresh.
Postal - 3 1/2 stars - This was really funny in a Joe Dirt kind of way. Close to 4 stars for me. RT gives this one 8% - WTF !!! Dudes don't take this all so friggin serious - Postal is funny and throws bad politically incorrect jabs at just about everyone and everything. Well, I said it was a Joe Dirt kind of film and RT gave that 11% whereas I gave it 4 stars.
Barron and the Kid - 3 stars - Johnny Cash plays a pool hustler who finds out he has an adult son who is hustling also. It's a nice little movie and if you're a Johnny Cash fan like I am you'll probably like this. June is in the movie, too. You just have to love her.
