I watched a few films from the "Whistler" series of the 40s, all starring Richard Dix. Secret of the Whistler, Power of the Whistler, and Mysterious Intruder. Up next is the classic chiller "Dead of Night," which is one of the most famous films to not make it to DVD yet.
Oh, and for black friday I bought a gigantic new truck!
Yep, I needed one with the extended cab so I can carry two child seats...They are giving full size trucks away these days so I got a new Dodge Ram. (The sticker price was 39K and I got it for 22.5, with a Hemi, woohoo!)
Professor, if you had fun watching the Whistler movies, have you seen Richard Dix chewin' the scenery in a genuinely creepy and effective way as a ship captain with authority "issues" in Ghost Ship? (I watched a bunch of Whistlers on TCM a while ago, and now I'm catching up with my Val Lewtons.)
The Boys in Company C - Not as good as Full Metal Jacket, but its spiritual predecessor. Worth watching if only to see Lee Ermey as a Drill Sargent again. 4/5
Gideon's Daughter - I've been wanting to see more Bill Nighy movies, and while he did a good job, this movie was just ok. 3/5
Superbad - Perfect timing for me, I tend to get kind of silly late at night and that is when I watched this one. I thought it was hilarious.
Currently watching Witchfinder General - last day to watch it on Watch Instantly.

Chronos - 5 stars - If you have 40 minutes to see this on NF Watch Instantly before Dec 1 do it. Here's the NF synopsis - Chronos is a wonder -- it's the first nonverbal, nonfiction movie filmed entirely in time-lapse photography. Presented as a visual symphony in seven movements, Chronos takes viewers on an unprecedented cinematic journey through the essence of time, across the worlds of natural beauty and man-made monuments. Prepare to be awestruck by this unique film that's unlike anything you've ever seen before. This is from Ron Fricke who did Baraka. I liked Baraka but enjoyed Chronos more.
I've watched His Girl Friday,
which I really liked. I thought it was great how the "misunderstandings" that Cary Grant brought on were actually believable! I could see getting confused myself if I was talking to him. My favorite was in the beginning when he went to meet Rosalind Russell's new fiance and gave the run around to the older man along w/ the new beau. 3.5 stars
I also watched City of God
This movie is based on a true story. It is pretty violent and heavy. I have mixed feelings after watching it as it has a believable and inspirational main character but the slums of Brazil are depressing. There is also the special feature which interviews more people who live in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. It is quite an epic story, the shots of the area are fantastic. I do feel like I know more about the area and would recommend this film to anyone. 4.5 stars (Documentary lovers will like it.)
