I just watched "Smart People". I was somewhat nervous before watching this movie, wondering, "Am I smart enough to watch this?" Fortunately, yes, I was smart enough. In fact, everyone's smart enough -- the movie was sort of a Curmudgeon Light. I've met cranky middle-aged smarties that were a whole lot crankier and a whole lot smarter than the people portrayed in the movie. Which would have possibly made it a better movie -- but not as fit for the mainstream, which I suspect is what Miramax wants -- "indie" movies that can be successfully marketed to the mainstream.

It was all right...if you haven't seen "Sideways". If you've seen "Sideways", you've seen this story before, done better, so save yourself some time and try something else. It's not that the movie is bad. It's not. It's just not as good as "Sideways".
Bad Santa the badder version
Happy Go Lucky

Mike Leigh's look at who is happy and who isn't, and basically most people aren't. 4/5 stars
Yesterday i went and saw Australia at the theaters. It was pretty good but I think it was tad bit too long (pushing three hours). 3/5 stars. I liked it but i didn't love it.

The other day I watched Twilight online. I almost turned it off 15 minutes into it b/c the acting was so bad. I felt like it was a halloween episode of The Hills or OC or something but w/ less rich kids. So i didn't turn it off and by the middle it was ok. I enjoyed the baseball scene the most out of the entire movie. I say 3/5 stars for me but I probably won't ever see it again and I am glad i didn't pay to see it.
my mom and stepdad have direct tv, which is pretty awesome for movies. i'm always able to clear some room on my queue during holidays (which i quickly fill up again, but i digress.)

The Strangers-3.5/5-a lot of bad reviews, but i found it surprisingly effective, mainly because the filmmakers remembered the most important aspect of horror: atmosphere.

Bad Lieutenant-4/5-while i'm not entirely sure i needed to see harvey keitel doing full frontal nudity, it was very powerful, if graphic movie. i want to rate it higher but i was distracted throughout. that would be a common theme throughout the weekend, unfortunately.

High Noon-3/5-i already knew what was going to happen really, so a lot of the suspense was lost. i did admire the craft and the performances. not my favorite western, but entertaining.

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead-4.5/5-my only complaints are the gimmicky editing effects used in the flashbacks, and wanting to know what happened to Ethan Hawke's character. otherwise, an excellent movie.

The Abandoned-3/5-not a great story, but another one with good enough atmosphere that i was able to get wrapped up in it anyway.

Under the Volcano-3/5-another one i wasn't able to watch in peace, but Albert Finney was strong enough to get me to enjoy it anyway. definitely in need of a rewatch.

Jigoku-4/5-awesomely bizarre. kinda lags in the middle but makes up for it with some of the wildest imagery i've seen in a horror film from this period. fans of asian horror should definitely check it out.
Got into the "holiday spirit" with some ooey gooey movies this past weekend.

This Christmas
- Available on IW until 12/3 It's your semi-typical "family gathering together for Christmas and everyone has a secret but in the end everyone is closer than when the movie started" kind of movie. It's mushy, yes, but still pretty funny and enjoyable.

Four Christmases - If Reese Witherspoon has a movie out, my mom will want me to take her and this was no exception. It was enjoyable enough, though. Pretty predicatable from start to finish, but nobody rambles on like Vince Vaughn and this time he was even bearable. I gotta say that Reese and Vince didn't work very well. They looked very awkward together. Not just the height difference, but just in general. Meh.

We took the kids to see Bolt on Friday. It was pretty much exactly what you would expect for a Disney animated feature. The kids liked it and that's all that matters. Nothing major to write home about, though.
Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek **** anime short, about half an hour. The artwork was beautiful.

Transmorphers ** even for a B movie some of the acting in this was horrible.

Watched more Noein, I think I am now 1/3 of the way done with this anime. It is really good so far, little on the slow side but I have patience.
I just watched Marie Antoinette (No link, sorry, the NF site is down), the great 1938 version with Norma Shearer. This was her first film following the death of her husband, "Boy Genius" Irving Thalberg who was head of production at MGM. Lots of folks have opined that Norma got better treatment at the studio because of this relationship -- of course she did! She was married to the golden boy -- but she was a fine (if a bit over the top on occasion) actress nonetheless. This is her best part, so I was a but gushy in my review. I'm a huge fan of hers, and I love MGM spectacle movies.
The Life & Death of Peter Sellers - 5 stars - This is a biography of Peter Sellers. I didn't know anything about his personal life but I liked him in Dr. Strangelove and Lolita. I've tried to watch The Pink Panther but always got distracted. What caught my attention was the NF synopsis, part of which said, "Sellers brought laughter to millions worldwide; behind the scenes, however, he was notorious as a selfish, spoiled brat who incessantly threw tantrums and abused his wives." That sounded like another actor I'm really fond of. Add to that Geoffrey Rush is playing Sellers and Charlize Theron is Britt Ekland and I had to see it. I thought it was amazing, funny, chilling, and tragic. Even a little creepy. This make me want to see a Pink Panther movie and the movie Sellers was most proud of making - Being There. If you like Peter Sellers and don't know what he was like behind the scenes you should see this.

The Valet
- 3 stars - A French comedy on Instant Watch that is expiring Dec 3. There were several expiring and none of them looked better than the others to me so I picked the one with the shortest run time. It was cute and tame. PG-13
My family's day-after-Thanksgiving movie was Slumdog Millionaire. (We don't go shopping; we go to movies.)

It has been getting enthusiastic word-of-mouth business in limited (read: Oscar-qualifying?) release, and the sold-out crowd we saw it with seemed to love it.

I liked the way Danny Boyle played with structure in the film -- I haven't read the novel, so maybe it is directly cribbed from the author's storytelling. First, the way the flashbacks dovetail with the fake, drawn-out suspense used by the quiz show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" is sort of hilarious -- it's like we're learning this kid's backstory during commercial breaks or something, and we're treated to cliff-hangers within the storytelling while we wait through the answering of quiz questions. And the multiple meta-references to Bollywood and its films was another witty running theme. Speaking of which, I also appreciated the score by A. R. Rahman.

Other than that, I don't know how to explain that I liked the film but didn't LOVE it without sounding like a spoilsport. Danny Boyle fans will be justifiably pleased with it, and people who enjoy Bollywood should also enjoy the homage-with-a-message, even if the Muslim/Hindu issues seem to be confusing the vast majority of commenters on the IMDb message boards.
After his last film, I haven't been too hot on Danny Boyle lately. I'll give this a go though.
I watched Satan's Little Helper last night just before it went off IW. It was definitely good for a few laughs. 3/5 stars.

And i saw Australia saturday night...it was good but not fantastic and way too long. It was one of those that could end 5 times. It was a good storytelling movie though so 3/5 stars.
