I was finally able to see Ruggles of Red Gap on TCM last night, and it was as good as advertised, and worth the wait of years to finally see it.

I also watched The Spirit, which was an embarrassment for all involved.
Thanks for confirming I don't need to add The Spirit to my Q, Professor. Every now and then I waver when I see the trailer.
Dirty Dancing!
Prof --

You closed down the shop in 20.0 just as my comment to Pihk was swelling to a crescendo of abuse and scatological references. So now, even before I have time to re-adjust my brassiere, I'm stepping aboard version 21.0 while I'm still vibrating from a sort of coitus interruptus.

Nevertheless, my brain is as sharp as a tab -- I mean a tack. Ruggles of Red Gap is worth the wait to see it. But if you're un-sympathetic to 'thirties black-and-white or to the post-Code resurgence of patriotism, you may throw up on your shoes.

TCM has aired some nifty English classics recently -- all of which I think about with pleasure. Outcast of the Islands, The Heart of the Matter, and Dead of Night -- (quite a different film experience than we usually think about when we hear the name "Ealing Studios").
Ouch, I apologize about that. Please cut and paste and keep the conversation going. I realized you two had some hanging chads still out there when I closed it, but it was the first time the thread was off the MB in a month, so I seized the moment.

I did catch Dead of Night on TCM when it aired (two months ago?)...and I thought it was worth the wait as well -- I've had no nightmares about the dummy.
The ventriloquist story is good. But it's the mirror episode that un-corks my rectum.
Just the opposite for me. I liked the ventriloquist story the best. The mirror story was very clever, but I felt as if I were reading a Bill Gaines comic (not that that's a bad thing), and trying to figure out the final panel. The dummy was more....visceral?
Your opinion is certainly the majority viewpoint. There are incidentals in the ventriloquist episode -- (i.e., the teeth-marks, the slap, etc.) -- that are unmatched in the rest of the film. And what's to be said about Michael Redgrave? He lives up to all the press.
I just watched him last night opposite Joan Bennett in Fritz Lang's "The Secret Beyond the Door" on Region 2 DVD from Facets. I thought the film was weak as a noir, but much better as a gothic mystery. Redgrave is appropriately mysterious. I sensed when watching that the movie requires multiple viewings, but I just don't have the time -- and as much as I am enamored of Joan Bennett, the inclination. I'd rather watch "The Reckless Moment" over and over.

A side note: the dvd I received from facets was cracked all the way through on one side, and my Mac still managed to plow through the whole thing with no interruptions, which amazed me. For those that don't know, DVDs are pressed onto a metal substrate sandwich between two pieces of thin plastic that make the disc. This disc had one piece of plastic intact, the other was cracked though.

Up next is Monty Wooley in the Pied Piper, which I have finally been able to acquire as a boot.
I guess your hole was centered? :-)
I caught So Long at the Fair (1950) this weekend on TCM. Just as advertised, once you were 10 minutes into the movie, you had to watch to the end. You have to find out how the brother disappeared and seemed to never have existed at all. The backdrop of the 1889 exposition and debut of the Eiffel Tower adds some atmosphere.
Requiem for a Dream 4 stars. Great movie about a couple of people fighting drug addition as there whole world gets turned upside down. Very good acting from the cast, plus it gives you a glimpse into the world of the dope fiend and how desperate they become for there next fix, while all the while it's ruining there lives.
