Mountains of the Moon (1990) 4 Stars, having watched it years ago ,just watched it again, probably good enough for a third watch in a couple years, can't praise a movie much more than that.
i bought a copy of Flying Down to Rio (1934) for a dollar. This has the same producer as King King and is similar in structure with a looong set-up with intermittent good stuff. Although the movie came out in the Code year 1934, there's definitely some suggestive stuff. The finale involves a hallucinatory flying dance sequence that's worth the wait.
Finally saw Appaloosa -- not the Brando film, but the one that came out last year. I don't know why Rene Zellwegger was singled out for critical abuse. I thought her character and her performance perfectly appropriate to this movie, which is a total fucking mess. I liked it, though.
What Just Happened is so minor, so unthreateningly anecdotal that I was able to enjoy it. A great cast, including Bruce Willis playing himself as a temperamental asshole. A real treat is Michael Wincott as a snivelly Brit director. His infantile tantrum in front of Catherine Keener's version of Sherry Lansing is a genuine kick.
Oh Jeebus Knowing was a heaping warm load of crap! I can't believe one of my friends actually recommended this one to me. I almost turned it off half way through but I kept hoping it was going somewhere, and of course it didn't. Was it trying to be religious or sacrilegious? Was it trying to be more of a mystery than a disaster movie? Pick a side and stick with it, guys!
Not even sure where you even saw it trying to merge "science and faith" because Nicolas Cage as an MIT astrophysics is only slightly less believable than Marky Mark as a biology teacher. Yikes that was bad. Are we sure M. Night Shyamalan didn't write/direct this one? Et tu Alex Proyas? BOO!
Nicolas Cage it's sad to say seems to have sold out long ago to the point where when I see his name attached to a project I file it for future reference, like a bad tag, I get the same feeling as I do when I see Horrorfest 8 films to die for associated with a scary movie that normally would look promising. By the way Ebert Loves Knowing , so he now wheres the bad tag as well..
Thanks for giving the heads up..
Death Note: Vol. 2 - I'm really liking this series. 4 .5 stars Wish it was on Instant Watch.
Black Jack: Collection 1: Episode 2 - I've seen 2 episodes of this series on Instant Watch and enjoyed them. 3 stars now but might get into it more as I watch more.
Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre: The Complete Series - This is an interesting series on Instant Watch. It's a kids TV show from 1982 with some top actors recreating fairy tales. I found this series last year when I watched all of Klaus Kinski's movies. He plays the beast in Beauty and the Beast. Typecasting! I watched a couple of the shows last weekend including one with Mick Jagger and I plan to see more. Actors include Jeff Bridges, Christopher Reeve, Liza Minnelli, Vincent Price, Jeff Goldblum and Billy Crystal. Hervé Villechaize (Tattoo) plays Rumpelstiltskin. Pretty cute show for kids and kids at heart.
Speaking of typecasting, I remember Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman) playing Pinocchio in the Faerie Tale Theatre series. I still think that casting is a witty echo of his career playing a distinctly unreal boy.
I'm glad the series is on IW -- it was out of print on vhs &/or unreleased on dvd for far too long.
