Pinocchio. Quite enjoyable, I liked it better than Snow White.

There's a reason. The former is a great cartoon while the latter is SHIT.

Jason and the Argonauts -- I especially like it when Talus (?) first comes to life, but some of the other stop-motion shit is even more outrageous.
What really struck me about Pinocchio this time around is how it conforms to classic myths. The "dummy" who starts out naive, goes through a coming-of-age process, with some trial and error, and achieves enlightenment/humanity in the end. Pinoke even has his own externalized daemon.
I was surprised to discover that the literary Pinocchio kills the cricket.

That's like Dumbo stomping on Timothy Q. Mouse.
To cleanse my palette of the bilge that is 2012, I came home and watched Sam Fuller's Korean War drama Fixed Bayonets!. Just as hokey as 2012 in many ways, but with a searing honesty (about a central character's seemingly triumphant overcoming an obstacle that is in fact quite tragic), this movie was made on a budget that probably wouldn't have paid for the lattes consumed on 2012. Fixed Bayonets! features great performances by Richard Baseheart and Gene Evans, and looks like it was filmed mostly on a sound stage, although some of the action scenes are quite spectacular, with stunt people getting blown off of cliffs and a suspenseful scene in a mine field that also touched on a central theme of the paramount importance of feet to the soldiers. Some Fuller movies I find flat-out bizarre and/or merely of academic interest, but this one delivers the goods.
Bajo la Sal - 4 stars. great Mexican thriller about a serial killer in a small salt-mining town.

The Fall ('06)- 4 stars. wonderful fantasy about a bond between a little girl and a suicidal man in a hospital set in the 1920's. great acting and beautiful cinematography.

The Killing Room- 3 stars. This one is okay. A group of people trapped in a room, unable to escape. A much better movie with a similar concept is Cube.

Thirst- 3 stars. Korean vampire movie. Pretty disappointed in this one, way too long and bordered on silliness.
I agree completely on The Fall. Great movie.

Bajo la Sal sounds pretty intereseting. I'm gonna queue it up. Thanks for the heads up.
I agree, The Fall is a great movie. Haven't seen Thirst yet but will soon. And you are the second person I've heard that liked this Bajo la Sal flick so I've Q'ed it.
Men Who Stare at Goats

I am apparently the only woman in the country that went to a movie this weekend and didn't see the vampire thing or
Precious.

It's about war and insanity and who are really the crazy people, the ones who seem to be or the ones who don't. It would be really easy to post spoilers so I won't say more except Mr. Clooney is aging well. That McGregor kid is kind of cute too.
If you do get a chance to see Precious (since it's currently only playing in limited run) you should definitely take it. That movie is pretty great. It's unrelentingly sad yet still hopeful. Good stuff.
Star Trek (2009)
Getting around to posting this, I would recommend it , a good way to pass the ST torch to my grand kids.
A fun Big budget popcorn movie " Except for the Uhura & Spock part. Eric Bana was a surprise, But Scotty (Simon Pegg) is to smile! I give it 3.5 strong C+.

I agree. Considering how truly awful it could have been, they did a good job.
Yeah theres always that worry.
