Just one film that I think everyone should see?

Seven Samurai by Kurosawa comes to mind.

I'm sorry to be nitpicking, but would English-language, non-US movies count as foreign? Lars von Trier's Dogville, for instance, is in English (w. Hollywood actors), but the crew is foreign and it was recorded in Sweden. Netflix lists it as Independent. I'm just wondering what exactly defines foreign.

I think a Lars Von Trier film would be considered foreign even though it is in English with an English speaking cast. I don't know.

What are the Academy rules on the subject? We know they relaxed the rule on language of origin but I'm still not sure if Dogville would count.

BTW, I found Dogville incredibly strange but still very appealing.

Way too hard of a topic. Two that everyone should have seen by now are Cinema Paradiso and Life is Beautiful. In my mind, they define foreign film.

To Knaldskalle's point though, are there any rules for what is considered a foreign film? I'm curious now.

I've given some thought to this. Wikipedia definition:

A foreign film is a film from a foreign country. Inside the US, Canada and the UK the term mostly applies to films made, in a language other than English.
