Benny (Aidan Quinn) is the overprotective caretaker of his mentally ill -- but artistically talented -- sister, Joon (Mary Stuart Masterson). When the eccentric Sam (Johnny Depp), who looks and acts like a silent-movie comedian, falls for Joon, the siblings' frail bond is put to the test. Depp's performance in this offbeat, beautifully acted love story scored a Golden Globe nomination. Julianne Moore and Oliver Platt co-star.
An average romantic comedy that never really pulled me in. Not much a Quinn fan, but I usually enjoy Depp and Masterson fairly well. Depp deftly plays another oddball character (loved the scene with the dinner rolls), and Masterson handles playing the mentally ill decently. The story is the problem here. It is too formulaic; it takes no chances. You don't really get caught up in the characters or their dilemmas.
I recently watched this on my own with a friend (her DVD) and didn't care for this at all. I guess I'm just not a huge fan of Depp and thought if this role would have been given to another actor it would have been better. Masterson is always watchable and I really liked her. This is the type of movie I could be doing several things like having a conversation and not be missing a thing. 2 stars.
