I just finished watching the movie. Quite interesting to say the least, and quite a young De Niro. I really enjoyed the music, carried the film along very well. I only realized after watching the film that it takes place around this time of year....

I tried to come into this movie with an open mind. I like De Niro, but abhor Streep. I don't find her attractive in the least bit - that is not to say she can't act, because I know she can. Something about her chiseled, porcelain look just turns me off. I never would have picked this movie to watch for myself. With that said...

Call me unromantic, call me an ogre, call me what you will. I found this movie to be boring. I enjoyed that it takes place, beginning and ending a year later, at Christmas, only because it is that time of year now. De Niro and Streep are both very young. The story itself moves at an interminable pace. I didn't feel the chemistry between the two characters, Frank and Molly. I didn't see the connection, feel the attraction, however you want to put it. These are two unconnected characters who run into each other on a train after a chance meeting in a bookstore. What is the impetus for the relationship? Seeing their family life before the chance meeting, neither seems unsatisfied. Where did this come from? This is a movie in which NOTHING happens. A supposed deep seated love develops because they sneak around and have lunch several times a week? I can't fathom what the point of this movie is. That it is okay to have an affair, destroying two families in the process? Maybe I missed something, because I'm so confused my head hurts.

Watched the movie--I hadn't seen it for quite some time. I generally like DeNiro but Streep always takes a while to grow on me (ok--she's fantastic in Mamma Mia!). I liked the movie but there seemed to be an emptiness in the story and the characters that I couldn't put my finger on that made it difficult for me to even care about them. It was nice to revisit an older movie. :)

I also saw Streep as being very hard to like and enjoy.

On a different note, what are your thoughts on having Documentaries listed as choices?

I'm all for it...I'll watch/talk about anything that's agreed on. :)

I passed on watching this one. Romance or romance like dramas tend to be my least favorite to watch. However there have been a few movies of that style I did enjoy but very few. Generally the few I have watched because something or someone has shown something about the title that fits right in with the narrow part of movies listed in the genre that I like. At best if it is a movie an actor(tress) I love (seen every movie they have done) may be enough to interest me in seeing a title. I recall doing this once and wasn't disappointed, but also wouldn't say I liked the movie all that much either. Typically those few I have seen tended to hover indecisively between didn't like and liked it.
