Here are some of the issues, please post those that you feel need to be addressed too.
1. How to have the future presentation of the expiring list be best put to use.
2. Since there's a limit to how much can be posted to a thread (40K Character limit), do we simply post titles that are no longer expiring which are listed as such in the new wonderful www.instantwatcher.com site?
3. Many of the threads are no longer active - lists with titles of a certain rating amount or less etc. Do we revive them and continue to regularly update them? Is there enough interest for this?
For right now I think the best way to handle expiring titles is to list those that are listed as expiring on instantwatcher but are no longer expiring. However I think if everyone contributes their ideas we may come up with something even better. The number of titles expiring is increasing as they add more and more to the collection. I believe in the last few weeks the total number of IW titles available has increased by something like 3,000 titles. At this rate by the end of 2009 there could be as many as 40,000 titles available which would mean like triple the number of titles expiring that we are seeing now. Plus given that on the 1st of the month is when the bulk of the titles for each month expire it can easily get tedious dealing with the titles for that particular date.
Looking at the thread history for the group here are my thoughts on the list threads:
The how many raters threads: It may very well be possible to list titles by this particular data using the instantwatcher site or even officially on the netflix site. We know that the number of raters can be analyzed due to the fact that netflix has an official top 100 list for all titles and top 25 lists for each genre. I only have a very limited understanding of RSS. So if it isn't possible to do them ourselves perhaps we can request netflix to make them. Alternatively it may be possible to use the API to form lists based on this info as well. However I don't know anything about the API.
Personally I have no interest in the oscar list threads. Although I can see the info being intriguing but it isn't something I'm considering when looking for titles to watch. Typically it is an after thought when the info is listed on the page. Could listing titles based on this oscar stuff be possible with the API?
Lists by actor(tress), director, etc people involved in a title appears to be covered by the instantwatcher site. The rest of the threads I didn't really have any thoughts. I think however with some ingenuity and use of the API, RSS, and other possible tools it won't be nessesary to maintain lists except for error lists pertaining to the generated lists.
About the expiring titles list, I'm okay with whatever you guys want to do.
However, wowwee123, I think it was you that said the main reason we were doing it is there was no way to see if a title was expiring unless it's in our IW queue. Since that isn't true anymore (we can now see the expiration dates on the front page of the title of the movie without having to add it to our IW queue), I'm also okay with not doing this list anymore.
Well, after all is said and done, this is after all a microcosm of the internet. People will follow with whatever is the path, but to help create that path, very few will actually do something about it.
Thank you MachZero & Techmo for taking the time to respond.
This is my plan - to continue the "Movie Club"; update the various lists that members here find the time to contribute to, as well as myself. The expiring list - is as yet undecided, for the time being I'm going to close the thread and at a future date, if there's a need to make use of it, we can always re-open it.
