The Godfather (I), Fifth Element, Leon The Professional, Love Actually, Moulin Rouge and Shawshank, or course. If I'm spinning the dial and one of these is on I'm hooked.

I have watched Sophie's Choice at least a dozen times. Any time a new person comes into my group of friends, they have to endure being Sophie-ized. Everything about that movie is perfection. It is the best work that Meryl Streep, as Sophie a Polish Catholic Holocaust survivor, ever did, for sure. Peter McNichols never had a better movie role than that of the young, virginal Stingo who discribes the tragedy of Sophie and Nathan and like sufferers as "butchered and betrayed and martyred children of the Earth”. Kevin Kline was the perfect Nathan; a combination of a tortured, obsessed paranoid schizophrenic, demanding of Sophie, in a moment of rage, his face just inches from hers, how it is that she came to survive to "breathe the sweet air of Earth, when so many million others went to their deaths in the crematoriums! EXPLANATION, PLEASE!!".
Sophie and Nathan both had a lot of guilt over their own personal survivals, which in the end, they could not overcome. The last person who watched this movie with me said, "This is what people mean when they call Meryl Streep one of the best actors of all time." Yes. This is the film that I judge other films by in the drama genre.
Just a little interesting tidbit about this film. Goldie Hawn wanted the role of Sophie passionately. She spent months promoting herself to the producers for the part. Can you imagine what a different film this might have been had Goldie Hawn played Sophie?
