October 2009 - Future Music Release Highlighted - Latin Music USA

Latin Music USA is a four-hour documentary film series about American music. Fusions of Latin sounds with Jazz, Rock, Country, Rhythm and Blues - music with deeper roots and broader reach than most people realize. It’s a fresh take on our musical history, reaching across five decades and across musical genres to portray the rich mix of sounds created by Latinos and embraced by all. Fittingly, the series launches in Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize the contributions of Latinos to the United States and to celebrate Latino heritage and culture.

The series features the music and stories of an extraordinary range of artists, including Salsa greats the Fania All-Stars, Celia Cruz, Ruben Blades, Ray Barretto, Willie Colón, Hector Lavoe, and Marc Anthony; Jazz fused with Cuban rhythms from Machito and the Afro Cubans, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Dizzy Gillespie and mambo pioneer Israel "Cachao" Lopez; legendary Chicano Rockers Carlos Santana, Linda Ronstadt, and Los Lobos; pop stars Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Selena, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin and Shakira and Juanes; Reggaetón performers Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderón; and Country legends Freddy Fender, Flaco Jiménez; and Alejandro Escovedo.

• DVD 1 - Episode 1: Bridges traces the rise of Latin Jazz and the explosion of the Mambo and the Cha Cha Chá as they sweep the US from East to West. Latin Music infiltrates R&B and Rock and Roll through the 1960s.
• DVD 1 - Episode 2: The Salsa Revolution shows how Puerto Ricans and other Latinos in Bronx New York reinvent the Cuban Son and the Puerto Rican Plena, adding elements from Soul and Jazz to create Salsa, which becomes a defining rhythm for Latinos the world over.
• DVD 2 - Episode 3: The Chicano Wave across the West and Southwest created their own distinct musical voices during the last 50 years. Their music would play an important role in the struggle for Chicano civil rights and ultimately propel them from the barrio to the national stage.
• DVD 2 - Episode 4: Divas and Superstars focuses on the Latin Pop explosion of artists like Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan Selena, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira in the Top 40. As studios concentrate on star-driven Pop, Latino youth gravitate toward urban fusions – Spanish Rap and Reggaetón, as well as Rock en Español.
