Highlighting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2010 nominees

The nominees for induction in 2010 were announced on September 23, 2009. The 2010 inductees will be announced in January 2010 and will officially be inducted on March 15, 2010 at the Hall's 25th annual induction ceremony.

This honor is meant for recording artists and bands that have "influence and significance to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll." Artists become eligible for induction in that category 25 years after the release of their first record. Among the things to consider are the "influence and significance of the artist's contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll." Ballots are sent to 500 "rock experts" who then evaluate the candidates and vote on who should be inducted. The performers that receive the highest number of votes and more than 50 percent of the vote are inducted.

The 2010 Rock Hall inductees are:

ABBA
Genesis
The Hollies
Iggy and the Stooges
Jimmy Cliff

A host of non-performers will also be ushered into the Hall, with individual recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award including music mogul David Geffen, along with songwriters Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Elle Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell.

Other 2010 Rock Hall nominees include:

The Chantels
Darlene Love
Donna Summer
Kiss
Laura Nyro
LL Cool J
Red Hot Chili Peppers

Congratulations to the 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Genesis. Almost no group in rock history has had such a long and varied career as Genesis, who began as a cult art-rock band in England in the late 1960s and went on to pack stadiums across the globe in the 1980s and 1990s. In the early 1970s frontman Peter Gabriel shocked audiences and grabbed headlines by taking the stages in outrageous costumes. Their music was equally innovative, and early albums Selling England By The Pound and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway are two of the most acclaimed prog-rock albums in the history of the genre. In 1975 Gabriel left the band to pursue a solo career and drummer Phil Collins stepped out from behind the kit to take over. The band experienced many more hits and successful worldwide tours over the next 30 years.

Peter Gabriel in Genesis.

Know your Genesis history:

Foxtrot, 1972, amazing album. “Supper’s Ready” is one of the best prog tunes of all time.

Well…now I know.

Congratulations to the 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Jimmy Cliff. The Harder They Come introduced reggae to a worldwide audience and changed the image of reggae from cruise ship soundtrack to music of rebellion and inspiration. “Sitting in Limbo,” “The Harder They Come,” “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” and “Many Rivers to Cross” made Jimmy Cliff internationally beloved and the movie soundtrack a best seller. A beautifully gifted singer and a uniquely influential songwriter, Jimmy Cliff has made a profound impact on music for over 40 years.
