In talking with my mother, who also needs subtitles, I've changed positions on this type of review. The movie details do NOT include info on subtitles for the hearing impaired so someone who needs this feature is taking a chance with some films. Leaving a review would be helpful to the next person who is hoping for subtitles and taking a chance that they are included. Ed8r Permalink Reply by Ed8r on July 21, 2009 at 6:17am
That's true, and I agree that the information is Helpful, per se. But remember that often these are folks who just haven't figured out how to access the [cc], which is virtually always available on recent DVDs (although not always from older ones).
Also. if a post is exclusively a comment - or more often just a complaint - about missing subtitles, it does *not* qualify as a movie review according to the Netflix guidelines.
But that's OK. Droidmaker told us that it takes up to 15 flags as "This is not a review" to equal ONE Helpful vote. So the one Wowwee123 listed above? 11 x 15 = 165. Do you think we're going to accumulate that many flags to have it removed? Not a chance. wowwee123 Permalink Reply by wowwee123 on July 21, 2009 at 8:45am
Remove this one or not? What about when there's more than one reviewer complaining about the subtitles? Leave the one with the most helpfuls? Ed8r Permalink Reply by Ed8r on July 21, 2009 at 9:48am
I think we should flag nonreviews, period. If someone feels a nonreview nonetheless provides Helpful information, then vote it Helpful. wowwee123 Permalink Reply by wowwee123 on July 21, 2009 at 9:50am
Final answer: this IS a non-review. Thank you! Did you flag it, even though there's no chance? Ed8r Permalink Reply by Ed8r on July 21, 2009 at 11:39am
Oh, yes. I'll take on lost causes. wowwee123 Permalink Reply by wowwee123 on July 21, 2009 at 8:52pm
Speaking of lost cases... what do you think about having it that titles with an X number of reviews or higher, not even be dealt with? What about a thread where we all post to, to alert each other about reviews that have been sitting over a month (or for X days or more) and in need of some tlc? jrim Permalink Reply by jrim on July 22, 2009 at 7:22am
Are you referring to popular movies that have so many reviews that the reviews move pages too fast to keep track of them? If so, that would make sense. I've had a difficult time following the reviews for Australia for that reason. Ed8r Permalink Reply by Ed8r on July 22, 2009 at 8:13am
I think Wowwee123 was referring to reviews that have votes for "Helpful," since we know that it will require more than 5 flags to eliminate it from the MDP. Whether 5 flags are required for every Helpful, we don't know. But I've been multiplying by 5 (read backwards up this thread for some simple math). wowwee123 Permalink Reply by wowwee123 on July 22, 2009 at 9:04pm
Yes, as jrim is saying, with titles that have a ton (literally in some cases) of reviews, does it really make a difference?
Also, I feel that there needs to be a change in the guidelines, now with over 500 reviews posted (and more than 200 removed). Ed8r Permalink Reply by Ed8r on September 8, 2009 at 1:14pm
No kidding. Every time I try to tackle Australia, I get lost and burnt out.
Maybe if I took notes or something? wowwee123 Permalink Reply by wowwee123 on September 8, 2009 at 2:38pm Also, I feel that there needs to be a change in the guidelines, now with over 500 reviews posted (and more than 200 removed).
Approximately a month and a half later, we've more than doubled the amount removed and to be removed.
My thinking is that with titles like "Australia" with so many reviews, and since it takes a lot of time to track them, that we put a cap on the total amount that we'll post from. When I'm searching through the thread, those with over 500, I ignore as it is a huge hassle for me. Now, what about those with over 2000? Quadruple the hassle and those titles with over 3000 posted from, that's 6x the hassle. Ed8r Permalink Reply by Ed8r on September 8, 2009 at 1:15pm

This isn't really a review, per se... My sister, my friend, and I were all extras in this movie. It's a remake of the 1988 cult classic of the same name and I'm really excited to see it released. However, I'm in the dark as far as release news goes... I'm thinking it's most likely going to be a limited theatrical release and then go straight to DVD - I just wanna see it!

(I will mark a review as helpful even if it's in a foreign language, assuming I can read it and they review the movie!)
