The Netflix Film School

Whether you really went to film school or not, let's create a group for learning about filmmaking. Bernardo Bertolucci once said "the only way to learn about making movies is to watch movies..." so let's create some Lists for folks to watch/discuss.

What Matters Most in the Process? 3 Replies

As this group concerns itself with the art and craft of filmmaking, I'd like some thoughts on the following: Yes, film is a collaborative art form, but who among the collaborators makes the most s...

Brown University: Semiotics 66 2 Replies

This course affected my understanding of cinema in general, and -- apparently -- had a wide effect across popular culture. I'm working on producing some movie lists from the course, but here's an i...

If one is to follow Bertolucci's belief, I think it's a good idea to see*:
The Wind (an American silent)
McCabe and Mrs. Miller
Bonnie and Clyde (great editing by the great editor, DeDe Allen)
Sullivan's Travels
In the Mood for Love
Blow Up
Drowning by Numbers
3 Women
Jules and Jim
Last Tango in Paris
High Noon
Gabrielle
La Strada
Groundhog Day
Stranger Than Paradise
Annie Hall
La Jetee
(a short film w/ more impact than many three times its length)
The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie
Shame

*Important caveat: These are not necessarily going to be films that one may like; they are listed as exemplars of film technique.

I wanted to major in Film and my school Cal State Long Beach has a great program yet my parents threatened to disown me so my friend Jan (chemical engineer major) and I (a history/ poly sci major) get together over coffee and work on screen plays. This group is great
