The Sarah Jane Adventures starts on Sci-Fi channel on April 11 (Fridays at 8). It is a spin-off of the original Dr. Who series. Sarah was the sidekick of Doctors 3 & 4 (Jon Pertwee & Tom Baker). K-9 will also appear on some episodes.
I tried to watch this - Revenge of the Slitheen (1) - but I only made it through about 15 minutes. It's just nasty - what age group do you think they are aiming for with the fart monsters? 3 - 4 year olds?
The show never gets great, but the Slitheen episodes are definitely the worst. It gets better as the season goes on. It never reaches DW or TW levels. If there is a 2nd season, I will watch it as long as it continues to get better.
If you decide not to watch it, you won't miss too much. There are no appearances from people on the other shows. Just Sarah Jane and K9 from the the 70s era DW.
I think they're aiming for young teens or even pre-teens but I agree -- this episode was the worst of the bunch (the only thing worse is when the Slitheen show up on DW). I do think the show gets better but Baff is right; it never reaches DW or TW levels. Did you get to see the "pilot"? It explains more about Luke's presence and that was even better than the first true episode.
Has anyone watched the series all the way through? What did you think of the big twist during the finale? CHawk -- if you're still going to watch the show, don't read any more. I was going to put the text in white but I just realized that's not an option on ning. :(
Spoilers for finale start here:
I thought the twist about Mr. Smith being bad was pretty interesting. I didn't see it coming at all. Clyde getting zapped into the computer was a little far-fetched but I can see kids enjoying that part. And Alan being so involved is kind of fun. I like that he's part of the action, now (and seeing him brandishing bottles of vinegar like a weapon made me laugh a little). Of course, I was pretty annoyed that they brought the Slitheen back but I tried to ignore that part. And all the plot holes were getting on my nerves (why didn't Mr. Smith just choose not to autorun the Armageddon CD?) but maybe kids wouldn't notice them. All in all, not a bad finale. If it gets picked up for a second season, I'll watch it. Hopefully there will be less Chrissie in it, though. She irks me to no end.
I agree with pretty much everything you said there. On the bright side they got rid of the constant farting from the Slitheen. Getting rid of Chrissie would definitely be a boon to the show. I want to slap her every time she opens her mouth. Fortunately, she was only on about half the episodes and usually just for 1 or 2 scenes.
Clyde has gotten a lot better, though I still don't much like him. If they gave Chrissie some normal lines, her vile lines would be easier to swallow.
I do like the 3 main characters (Sarah Jane, Maria, Luke). Having Alan in on the secret gives them more options. At the very least they have a 2nd car now. The show still has plenty of problems, but it is starting to reach some of its potential.
Just a quick comment on this series. I rented discs 1 & 2. It was a tad juvenile for my tastes, like Saturday morning kid show stuff. That's not a knock against it; it was an enjoyable production, I just couldn't get into it for the said reason. I like her car though...
P.S. Most of you may be too young to have seen "2001/a space Odyssey" when it came out, as I did see it on the big screen then. I'd say it was comparable, in its day, to the reactions the very first Star Wars got...blew everybody's minds; the SFX, the concepts, the music...don't think anyone remembers Ligetti, save for his music being used in the film. And I DID get the ending on a subliminal level.
