@Quentin, I agree that Der Ostwind is great. Shame that it isn't available on WI anymore.

Just added about 15 titles to the "great listing of short film" which Gingerbyrd was kind enough to mention in the info section. Hope you guys and gals put it to use.....although I don't think anyone actually visits this group anymore. Kinda of a shame to see it die off....

Disclaimer: Not sure if content discussed here should be restricted to films available on NF.

I am a bit of a short films junkie for the films on the iTMS, and some of my favorites are:
Deathdealer: A Documentary (starring aging alternative icon Henry Rollins and, uh, not a documentary. I hope.)

Full Disclosure. It's about a guy with a very unusual first date strategy. I couldn't find this one at NF.

Our Time is Up. Stars Kevin Pollak as a psychiatrist who changes his way of treating patients when he's diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Kind of a Blur. Features Sandra Oh and a great twist ending. I couldn't find this at NF and IMDB doesn't mention a DVD release.

Cheers.

I'm a little late to this discussion, but the historical answer is a two reeler was considered a short (20 min). Ala, 3 stooges or Laurel and Hardy shorts. Most early features were as short as one hour. Which would be "short" by todays standards.

So what to call a film between 20 min and an hour? Books between a short story and novel are called novellas. How about filmovellas =) Or, is there a word for them?

I just saw an 11 minute short that was very nicely done called "Windowbreaker". I liked it quite a bit.
Watch now here on Netflix.

It's great. It has the best of an action movie in just a few minutes!
