I'm always on the lookout for good Sci-Fi I haven't seen yet -or at least that I haven't seen for a while.... Let's help each other uncover some of the hidden treasures!
I scanned through the thread and didn't see Starhunter-Starhunter 2300 on the list. I may have missed it if someone did mention it, but starhunter was a decent sci fi series. 2300 is season 2 and I thought it was much better than the first season.
Starhunter is about bounty hunters in a lawless universe (yeah i know alot like firefly), but it is unique and fun. You can also get both seasons on Netflix.
I watched a pretty interesting old series this past weekend, called Quark. It was a comedy SF similar to Red Dwarf, a take on Star Trek, and maybe something like Blake's 7, but with humor. Some have described it similar to Spaceballs, but I think more like Red Dwarf, as I didn't care about Spaceballs. Yes, it's older, maybe some of the humor is dated, but I got a few chuckles out of it, which is more that I can say for most comedy films these days. Also it had some pretty imaginitive characters.
I thought you might be interested in some possibly lesser known tv series. I highly recommend Earth 2.
I see Netflix recently got Psi Factor (hosted by Dan Aykroyd), but only season 3 - it's about a team that researches the paranormal, but I don't think it was U.S. made, so it was hard to get a hold of. I just started watching it today, but I'll let you know if it is as good as I used to think it was - season 3 does drop us in the middle of things, and doesn't offer much background, so that is a minus.
I loved Dresden, too, and was crestfallen when they axed it. It turned me to the books, at least.
I seem to be the only one who likes Painkiller Jane. I discovered it on Instant Watch and plowed through almost the entire season in one weekend. (I haven't quite finished...netflix account on hold until other bills are paid). I can see why people were immediately turned off, but also I think Painkiller Jane is one of those shows that doesn't mature early (like Dollhouse, only Whedon really knows how to gas it in a way that blows your mind). By the end-arch I was pretty into the show.
Thanks for this thread. I'm going to look into some of the posted suggestions. First and foremost, Torchwood.
"Seconds" with Rock Hudson. Great film that nobody ever remebers from the 1960s.While not sci-fi per se it is well-directed,acted and filmed.Make sure you watch the bizarre and creepy camerawork during the opening credits though!
"Solaris" 2002(remake) is very well made and has a great "look" to it.
"Gattaca" is sort of a combination of a mystery and sci-fi flick.
"Journey to the Far Side of the Sun" 60`s british film w/Roy Thinnes and surprisingly good.
"Logan`s Run" classic 70`s! Watch it again.Movie still holds up even after 30 years.
"The Day the Earth Stood Still" the 1951 original.Arguably the finest science fiction movie ever made.A+
"Brazil" a quirky 80s flick with a cool retro feel to it.Terry Gilliam directs.
"Enemy Mine" another great 80s enemies-become-friends film.Lou Gosset is incredible as the alien.
"A Boy and His Dog" based on the Harlan Ellison short story and fun!
"They Live!" cool 89`s John Carpenter alien invasion film.
"The Thing" the 1982 Carpenter remake of a 50s classic.Very scary and very graphic.
