and then there's his more traditional zombie tale, with a less traditional zombie story protagonist...

THE RISING is easily one of the best debuts i've ever read, and by far the best zombie novel I've come across. CITY OF THE DEAD just blew donkey...

...well, he never intended to do 'city of the dead', the publishers just kinda forced him into it 'cause 'the rising' sold so well...i still like 'city' though, i don't know what i'd do if i had to sit and think 'bout that cliffhanger ending.

He hinted at one point that the publisher wanted to hit him up for a third entry in the series, but after reading CITY, there's no place else for the story to go.

I gave up on TERMINAL about halfway through. Once he forced that cheat on the audience, all the great writing that came before it was null and void. I don't think I've read a Keene since.

i agree. i finished it, but didn't like it. i picked it up after driving to beckley for a book signing, 'cause i wanted my dogeared copy of 'the rising' signed, and felt like i had to buy a book since i was there. but in his defense, 'ghoul' wasn't bad, just a li'l stephen king-ish (who, i haven't really read since i was like, twelve or something) and i liked 'conqueror worms', but mostly 'cause his stories take place out here in appalachia, where i'm at.

...and then there's max brooks' two awesome tomes of the undead uprising

I thought World War Z was good, but not great. I'll be excited to see it as a movie that is for sure.

...that's where we differ micro. i think that wwz is probably the best zombie book EVER. i've read it like fifteen times or something. the wife thinks i'm psycho. i'm scared of the movie, that they'll fuck it up, but i felt the same about the 'dawn' remake, and love the hell outta that.

I just don't think it had enough character development for me to have any real empathy for any character in particular.

Not to mention Max Brooks is a hell of a speaker in person and this book doesn't capture his energy and emotion.

...well, i felt like the entire 'incident' was a character, and that was developed quite well...i just loved it, i don't know why exactly.
