I’m a great admirer of 1940-50s film noir and Japanese cinema (notably from the era of Ozu and Naruse). But I also love films today, including the examples you’ve mentioned (Jane Austen adaptations, Eastern Promises).

A few of my more recent favorite films include: Punch-Drunk Love, Summer Hours, Still Walking, Before Sunset, Spirited Away, All the Real Girls, The New World, Atonement, Million Dollar Baby, Three Times, among many others…
