Vaxit, 200 isn't bad... mine is filled up, can't add anymore! I downgraded my subscription to two movies at the time... so movie watching is sloth-like around here.
I didn't get to see Damage this weekend, oh well, will try again. I don't like Malle's earlier movies - the French wave genre. I have a hard time relating to the characters because to me they seem to be almost devoid of emotions. I like emotions, they make the characters alive and relate-able.
Oh, I find movies by different means. I've been on Scarlett Johansson kick and close to finish on my Ryan Gossling kick. I am on Jensen (writter & director) kick still. As you can see... there is really no method to my movie madness. ";)
I watched Wes Anderson movies a long while ago, and need to rewatch some of them. But I think if you don't care for The Royal Tenenbaum, chances are you won't like The Darjeeling Limited either. It's abstract and rather absurd... the key to appreciating Anderson's works, I think, is to be able to zero in on the underlying messages. He twists what most people deem important and puts a spin on them to make them funny to the point of ludicrous. It took me a while to be able to appreciate this his style... which I think borders dark comedy.
Is drama your favorite genre?? BTW did you see Into The Wild??? If you have, do you like it?
Hi,
I haven't seen TLDV yet. It's on my wish list as well as The Decalogue. I have close to two hundred films on my wish list and have quite a time trying to determine what to watch next. I'm constantly shuffling the que. I enjoyed Au Revoir Les Enfants also. I've seen Vanya on 42nd Street, Damage, Elevator to the Gallows, and My Dinner with Andre. I don't recall much about VO42S but believe I liked it. The others I didn't, even though Juliette Binoche (who is one of my favorite French actors) was in Damage. I found them either boring or too dark for me.
It may seem silly but I find movies by the actors I enjoy or the synopsis of a film. I've never think to look by director, which seems the most logical way. Thanks for the idea!
I've seen TRT and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou by Wes Anderson and wasn't crazy about TRT and hated The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The Darjeeling Limited looked interesting. I may give it a try.
Most of the French movies I've liked are fairly recent films. I'll have to go back and look at what I've seen. Films with Tatou, Binoche. Depardeu, Autiel and Sophie Marceau films are what come to mind at the moment althoughI can't say I enjoyed every film each of them has been in. Have a great weekend!
Vaxit, hi! I don't remember whether you said you have watched The Double Life of Veronique or not??? Sorry... I talked to a number of different people about Kieslowski movies, now I can't remember who watched what. I watched it about three week or so ago, and still have not written anything down. It is by far the most challenging of Kieslowski's for me. Some folks see that it is about life and fate... I on the contrary see it as a statement of Kieslowski's political view. I am still processing, hopefully I will find a chunk of time this weekend to sit down and write. Writing is my way of sorting things out. So... if I were right, you have seen TDLV, care to say something about it?
Let me know after you watch White and Red again. My views about them don't change after the third viewings, but I do get a clearer view and better appreciation for them.
Europa Europa is a powerful movie I recently watched - really like it. I think I have The Counterfeiters on my queue?!
This weekend I am trying to watch a few more French new wave films - Louis Malle and François Truffaut. So far, I feel I don't get this genre, I think I am not artistic enough to appreciate them. I like Au Revoir Les Enfants (Malle's), but I just could not catch on to his other movies. I have troubles getting interested when I see the characters show very little emotions.
BTW do you like Wes Anderson's movies... The Darjeeling Limited, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums etc???
Anyhow... have a good weekend resting and watching movies.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Blue. I agree, no matter how hard one tries not to be, we are tied to others in some fashion. The feeling of liberation stems, IMHO, from finding relationships we find satisfying and the opposite from those we find uncomfortable. I believe the emotions evoked are byproducts of how the situations are viewed. There are boundaries in any type of relationship, some may seem very rigid and confining, others pleasant with many options but they still have limits and it is subjective and as you said, like it or not, what we do does have an effect on others.
I haven't done much writing. Talking always helped me sort things out. I am enjoying being a member of this community and hope with more involvement my writing will improve.
I will be watching White and Red soon. Last time I watched the trilogy White was my favorite. It will be fun to see if it still is. I think the rescue scene in Red confirms your observation that it is the culmination of the trilogy.
I just finished The Counterfeiters and Europe Europa which I liked very much. I took you up on your recommendations and have Something like Happiness and Adam's Apples plus Wings of Desire on the way from Netflix. I belong to a dvd swap site also and have a few that should show up in the mailbox any day now so I will have quite a selection for what's next. Have a good one:)
Vaxit, thanks for sharing your thoughts on Blue. You're right, Kieslowski movies demand several viewings. I have watched Blue three times, and it won't be the last. I love that sugar cube scene, but I never associated with anything - thought it was just a cool scene.
This is part of what I wrote down on Blue: In Blue, he explored liberty from a personal vantage point. What I got from Blue is that liberty is essential to human life, but humans cannot exist in isolation from each other. In response to tragic events, we tend to withdraw ourselves from others, trying to remove the sources of our pain and disappointment. But whether we like it or not, we exist because of others. What we do directly and indirectly affect others. Then the challenge is to live life free, so that we could affect other lives in positive ways.
Writing helps me process my thoughts.
Will you be watching White and Red again??? I feel that Red is the culmination of the Trilogy. I love Kieslowski movies because they speak about his political views in symbolism. I am not artistic in any stretch of imagination, so I can't really comment on the aesthetic values of movies. I watch movies for the human interest stories. Kieslowski's movies are loaded when it comes to human interest. He was such a talented person.
BTW what are you watching next?? I have been hooked on Anders Thomas Jensen's movies. I watched Adam's Apples and Flickering Lights.... love them... I can't wait to receive The Green Butcher... hope to see it this weekend along with an interesting sounding Japanese movie a friend recommended called The Taste of Tea. Well... I hope to watch them both in between watching some football! Hah.
Oh, ah sorry.. I thought we were talking about good movies in general! Have you seen The Decalogue series?? They are awesome, but may want to watch it one episode at the time. How'bout The Double Life of Veronique - I just saw this myself, not too long ago. It is excellent.
Yep, I have seen The Namesake and love it. I have not seen the other you mentioned, so I will check them out.
Yeah, let me know what you think after reviewing them... like I said, I am always up for discussing Kieslowski's works. As for recommendations... let see, the last good movies I watched are The Lives of Others, Europa Europa, Adam's Apples (a dark comedy with an agenda, in my opinion), East Is East... and do check out this one called Something Like Happiness.
