On anther note ... Did anyone see the preview of Star Trek XI on Cloverfield

I had heard rumors about this for several years now, but seeing the preview on Cloverfield made me wonder why are they basically starting from scratch as in the building of the Enterprise and Crew from the Kirk days as if the TOS they were older. And Didn't They already build the Enterprise on the Series titled Enterprise.

I just don't understand. Are there not enough baddies from ALL the series that they could have expanded on or even created new ones with maybe Wil Wheaton as the new Captain of his OWN starship

Well, I am no Trekkie. I did like TOS, but not much of anything after that. And none of the movies did much for me. The preview did peak my interest, but it's just a teaser. Who knows if that scene will actually be in the movie. Is the title going to be "Under Construction"? Kind of odd.

A couple of ideas come to mind: 1. They may have looked at the "Battlestar Galactica" re-imagining and its success and decided that what worked once could work again.
2.By going back to the beginning--they may get a bigger response from the already existing Trek fan base--as the original show holds a special place in the regard of almost all Trek fans--whereas many who are very fond of STNG aren't nearly as fond of Voyager--etc.
3. Even though the actual outcome of the plot (or plotS they probably hope if the 1st is successful) may be different--they can borrow a little from the 1st series without seeming plageristic--as fans would expect some similarities!

There were actually 8 different Enterprise ships. That is simply the name they give to the flag ship. The Enterprise on the recent TV show is not the same one used by Kirk about 100 years later. The Enterprise in the teaser trailer is Kirk's first Enterprise, though he was the 3rd captain. The first captain was Robert April and the 2nd was Christopher Pike (shown in a couple of the first episodes of the original series). This version of the Enterprise was 20 years old when Kirk took command in 2265. I guess the building of the ship is just for the teaser and probably won't be part of the movie.

USS Enterprise (XCV 330) circa 2130s - Drawings of this ship are visible in background images in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek: Enterprise.

Enterprise (NX-01) 2151–2161 - The United Earth Starfleet's Enterprise is the main setting of Star Trek: Enterprise.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) 2245–2285 - Original ST series and movies 1-3, was destroyed in The Search for Spock.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A) 2286–2293 - Used in Star Trek 4-6, decommissioned, then brought back out and destroyed in one of the books.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B) 2293–2320s - Launched at the start of Star Trek Generations. James T. Kirk goes missing during the ship's maiden voyage. According to the Star Trek novels, Demora Sulu becomes captain, after Harriman.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C) 2332–2344 - This ship plays a major role in the Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise". According to dialog in the TNG episode "Redemption, Part II", the ship was destroyed attempting to defend the Klingon outpost Narendra III from Romulan attack.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) 2363–2371 - The main setting of The Next Generation TV series. This ship is destroyed in the film Generations.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E) 2372–Active (as of 2380) - ST movies 8-10.

Plus several other models mentioned in alternate future timelines in some books.

WOW Thanks for the info Baff. Honestly I never paid much attention the to the ships. I was just wondering why they are starting the movie from when James T Kirk took it over. I only mentioned the ship because it shows them building it.

I think they are going to have a hard time selling this movie because it is going to be compared to the original much loved show. If they try to keep too close to the look and feel of the original, I think they will be doomed to failure. If they revamp things too much, they may lose a lot of the core fanbase. The ship will need to look like the ship and certain other details will need to stick to canon.

One of the main reasons I have little interest in Star Trek: Enterprise is that it is a huge step backwards in technology. This movie will have that same problem. Yawn, been there, done that.

I'm figuring they will do a job kinda like the Lost in Space movie where they try to give it a whole new edgier look with bigger explosions. I didn't like the Lost in Space movie though, so that doesn't give me the greatest hope. How many old TV shows have been redone successfully as modern movies? Addams Family is the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

It's possible they could pull this off, but I am skeptical. I am looking forward to seeing Simon Pegg as Scotty though. I have mixed feelings about Zachary Quinto (Sylar on Heroes) as Spock. He has the right look, but every time I see him, I think "scary, evil".

I know what you mean. I think it will be interesting in how they try to pull it off, but I definately agree that I am expecting a major let down.

I remember Lost in Space (TV) and I agree that they over done the movie by a mile, but it still had its entertainment value to me. The only other TV show that went to movie that I found amusing or at least good enough to watch more than once was The Brady Bunch Movie ... hated the sequel though. I felt they brought enough of the original funny moments to it that made it watchable.

I really haven't looked too closely to the character list of the new movie to see who was playing whom. ... Sylar as Spock I don't think I will like that ... although he does have that unemotional look to him that made Spock, well Spock.

Wow Baff, you are an even bigger dork than I am. Respect!

I think making a Star Trek prequel is a bad idea. I knew when they started the Enterprise series, that going back into Star Trek's past was a mistake and I think this movie will be another mistake too. What I would like to see is a movie based on the Deep Space Nine series. But that would probably be hard to do considering how they ended it.

"Captain Crusher, I assume?" -hilarious Pooh!
You know, I think that one of the biggest problems with Trek over the years, is not so much a lack of invention or ability to take the show in new directions -but rather over-invention and constant reinvention by producers or writers who are too lazy to even watch the material that precedes it.
I mean, why not explore the beginning of the Romulan War? I think there are tons of baddies that could be developed or threads from decades past that could be pulled together in an exciting new way-if only the franchise would stop abusing the goodwill of its' fans and employ someone (like Baff) who obviously knows their stuff.
I've got my fingers crossed for this movie.

EW and the Star Trek Movie website have the new poster for the movie. I gotta admit, the casting seems just great. It also has Simon Pegg and John Cho who I love. I really hope they don't mess it up.

The first official images of Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoë Saldana), and Nero (Eric Bana). I don't know if the picture resolution will be enough to see it, but look closely at the reflection in the eyes):
