I just finished the entire series and I must say that as a whole it is worth everyone's attention. It is not perfect at all and some of the movies arent as good as the others but taken as a singular piece it is the height of Japanese pulp cinema from the 70s.

Cool stuff:
Acting is WAY above par for these kinds of movies.
Spraying of blood never gets old.
Amazing action sequences in every one.
Seeing a samurai fight with weapons other than a sword was a nice change.
I laughed (in a good way) with how ridiculous the babycart was.

Lame stuff:
Episodic to put it mildly - almost each movie has the same plot.
Hits its peak right away with the first film.

What does everyone else think? I am not being too mean am I?
I love them for what they are - Well done samurai flicks that give you exactly what you would want -nothing more and definitely nothing less.

I love these films. Seeing them made me go out and buy all the original manga, whihch are even better than the films.

I think your assessment is spot-on. These films do deteriorate in quality from first to last, but Tomisaburo Wakayama is always very good, especially in the action department. Watching that guy will spoil you to any other samurai action scenes.

Limb-chopping, blood-hosing good fun.
